Paint breeders,help

Judith, did you read the link of Jiggers,it says Lethal white can occur with Tobianos too,I realise its rare but a Tobiano mom can have a overo baby and vise-versa so the gene can pass that way too.Its upsetting and never want another baby like that, its heartbreaking to say the least.

I didnt read the link info. It can occur with a Tob but is very rare, and often they are actually Tovero not true Tobiano. Bloody paints :) I think I'll stick to these Dark Bay or Browns (running joke in TB as EVERYTHING is registered that way) Pretty sad deal, How's momma makin out?

That's so sad.

A nearby neighbor had twins born to her TWH mare a few days ago. One is 50 lbs, the other is 20lbs and both are doing fine so far! They're so itty bitty they don't look real.

Look @ the little ones feet...it's hard to see in the pic but she's practically flat footed right now!

Thx guys,ma ma finally rejoined the herd today realising babys gone :( .
In that artical Jigger posted,I got reading the whole thing and noticed when the writer said he NEVER crosses a Painted Robin with a paint, that got me going through papers,as I figured the stud had Painted Robin breeding, that was part of why we liked him,we knew he could throw the painted palamino, and apparently the lethal gene too. Interesting what one can learn, its important to keep up to date on stuff.

Hello, I would first like to say I'm very sorry for your loss. I have a few questions about paints and LWO. PLEASE understand I'm not wanting to ruffle anyone feathers I'm just asking questions. Do you test any of your mares for the LWO gene? What about the studs you breed them too, have they been tested for the gene? I just got my 1st ever paint mare this winter and she is a wonderful gal, with good lines, I have thought about breeding her, shes not a overo she is a tob. but she also shows some signs of carrying other patterns, From everything I have read about LWO it is something that a breeder can prevent, so why would a paint breeder not test for this? I know I will have her tested just to be on the safe side even tho she is not a overo...Why would any breeder of any breed not test for a disease, gene mutations, or other forms of testable problems in the breed they are producing? I understand some people who run large numbers of breeding mares could say it's to pricey, but at around 25.00 u.s.d for a test, wouldn't that 25.00 be worth never having to worry about LWO, never having to call out a vet to put down a LWO foal( I'm betting this would cost more than 25.00), what about just the mare care alone while prego? I'm guessing that costs more than 25.00( vet care, prego check, extra feed, etc.) If a breeder does not want to invest in DNA testing why not breed to solid horses? The risk is way less than breeding to another paint. Here is some info on the types of DNA testing for paints http://www.animalgenetics.us/Equine.htm

Because greg and I were going on old info about the glass eye we felt we were safe, the mare has two browns eyes, guess the info has changed. Gregs niece has a overo mare that had about 6 normal, beautiful foals before they had a lethal white, and again this mare had a normal foal, this apparently happens alot. But I'm with you,Dandy will only be bred to a quarter horse from now on.

Oh and remember the prices you are quoting are American,a vet doesn't walk onto soil in our area without at least a $200 bill.We try very hard to raise animals that don't need vet visits.

you don't need a visit from the vet to get the horses tested. YOU pull out mane or tail hairs and mail them to the lab, they mail you back the info.....And our vets here aren't cheap either, If I can do it without a vet you can bet your boots I do.

Read in mag that at least 4 genetic diseases are linked to Foundation QH  I think I'm gonna be sick.. These are some of the best, including Old King!! :( One disease causes the layers of the skin to seperate if any pressure is put on it..

the feathers thing was just so that everyone understood I wasn't being crabby with you. In no way did I want to make it sound like I was coming down on just you, I'm just wondering why more paint breeders don't test for things that run in the breed. As with any breed paints have their problems. I have never bred horses! I have only bred dogs and in the dogs we tested for eyes,hips,elbows...all problems in the breed I was breeding.
