Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf pulled out of important, high level talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai today and sent a high level envoy instead. The no show was a surprise to most observers. Now the independent media in Pakistan is announcing that he's declaring a "State of Emergency" and will cancel upcoming elections. The government owned media is denying it, but it does seem like a reasonable explanation for him withdrawing from the talks. He's under terrible stress, partly because of his support of the United States in Iraq. Will Pakistan be the next country to implode because of Bush's invasion of Iraq?

In a word? Yes

The troops currently in Iraq should have gone after Bin Laden in Afghanistan and the Paki border. Bin Laden would be dead, Al Qaeda would be gone, the Taliban would be gone, and we would be leaving Afghanistan.

Oh yeah....Saddam would still be selling oil for food and keeping a lid on a secular Iraq....but the no fly zone would still be enforced.

In late 2001 and well into 2002, the 82D Airborne and the Delta Force DID chase OBL, AQ, and the Taliban OUT of Afghanistan, right into Pakistan. Due to political correctness and the Paki Government being absolute twits, the 82D could NOT persue insurgents into Pakistan.

My nephew was at a fire base in southeast Afghanistan over 9,000 feet in elevation for 4 months, chasing and killing insurgents practically everyday right up to the border. He told me that the only way they were ever going to totally clean the area out would be with nukes.

You presume one helluva lot, Goodpasture.

I wonder though; how would you feel about the Mexican army crossing your border chasing someone they considered to be as bad as we feel about OBL? I know I would be up in arms (literally) if a foreign army (including the US) came chasing some scoundrel into my country. That's just the way the world works.
The real crime is that Pakistan is either unwilling or unable (and it appears that it may be a bit of both) to deal with the Taliban. It also appears as though Pakistan has a vested interest maintaining an unstable Afghan/Pakistan border region.

Good point.

However, in this particular situation, the old saying "you're either WITH us or AGAINST us" comes to mind. I have my doubts the Paki's are WITH us. They probably do stand to profit from an unstable region, all the while cashing US foreign aid checks.

Well, then the president shouldn't have said something he couldn't/wouldn't back up. Was it just some pseudo-texas macho BS when he said that we would not stop until the ones responsible for 911 were either killed or captured no matter where they were? The entire world was behind us after 911 but he squandered that with an ill-timed invasion of Iraq. OBL is still out there somewhere and his organization is getting stronger each day again along with the Taliban and insurgency and suicide bombers, etc. You rightwing hawks seem to be backpedaling a little by talking about a nation's soverncy when are interests are at stake now with concern for Pakistan.

Believe me, the All-Americans and their commanders wanted nothing more than to chase them to the ends of the earth and double tap ALL of them. Another reason politicians shouldn't run wars.

As far as warlords go, they will ALWAYS be there in Afghanistan.

Who do you think moved much of the US Military goods and gear?
