Palin, a "fatal cancer to the Republican party"

fff

Well-known member
So says David Brooks.

David Brooks spoke frankly about the presidential and vice presidential candidates Monday afternoon, calling Sarah Palin a "fatal cancer to the Republican party" but describing John McCain and Barack Obama as "the two best candidates we've had in a long time."

In an interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg at New York's Le Cirque restaurant to unveil that magazine's redesign, Brooks decried Palin's anti-intellectualism and compared her to President Bush in that regard:

[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party. When I first started in journalism, I worked at the National Review for Bill Buckley. And Buckley famously said he'd rather be ruled by the first 2,000 names in the Boston phone book than by the Harvard faculty. But he didn't think those were the only two options. He thought it was important to have people on the conservative side who celebrated ideas, who celebrated learning. And his whole life was based on that, and that was also true for a lot of the other conservatives in the Reagan era. Reagan had an immense faith in the power of ideas. But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices.
Brooks praised Palin's natural political talent, but said she is "absolutely not" ready to be president or vice president. He explained, "The more I follow politicians, the more I think experience matters, the ability to have a template of things in your mind that you can refer to on the spot, because believe me, once in office there's no time to think or make decisions."

The New York Times columnist also said that the "great virtue" of Palin's counterpart, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, is that he is anything but a "yes man."

"[Biden] can't not say what he thinks," Brooks remarked. "There's no internal monitor, and for Barack Obama, that's tremendously important to have a vice president who will be that way. Our current president doesn't have anybody like that."

Brooks also spent time praising Obama's intellect and skills in social perception, telling two stories of his interactions with Obama that left him "dazzled":

Obama has the great intellect. I was interviewing Obama a couple years ago, and I'm getting nowhere with the interview, it's late in the night, he's on the phone, walking off the Senate floor, he's cranky. Out of the blue I say, 'Ever read a guy named Reinhold Niebuhr?' And he says, 'Yeah.' So i say, 'What did Niebuhr mean to you?' For the next 20 minutes, he gave me a perfect description of Reinhold Niebuhr's thought, which is a very subtle thought process based on the idea that you have to use power while it corrupts you. And I was dazzled, I felt the tingle up my knee as Chris Matthews would say.

And the other thing that does separate Obama from just a pure intellectual: he has tremendous powers of social perception. And this is why he's a politician, not an academic. A couple of years ago, I was writing columns attacking the Republican congress for spending too much money. And I throw in a few sentences attacking the Democrats to make myself feel better. And one morning I get an email from Obama saying, 'David, if you wanna attack us, fine, but you're only throwing in those sentences to make yourself feel better.' And it was a perfect description of what was going through my mind. And everybody who knows Obama all have these stories to tell about his capacity for social perception.

Brooks predicted an Obama victory by nine points, and said that although he found Obama to be "a very mediocre senator," he was is surrounded by what Brooks called "by far the most impressive people in the Democratic party."

"He's phenomenally good at surrounding himself with a team," Brooks said. "I disagree with them on most issues, but I am given a lot of comfort by the fact that the people he's chosen are exactly the people I think most of us would want to choose if we were in his shoes. So again, I have doubts about him just because he was such a mediocre senator, but his capacity to pick staff is impressive."

One of the reasons John McCain picked Sarah Palin (other than Steve Schmidt forbidding him from picking his friend, Joe Lieberman) is her supposed appeal to women, especially disgruntled Hillary voters. It hasn't worked that way at all. Instead of getting a conservative evangelical whose distinguishing characteristic was her strenuous opposition to abortion, the public perception has become a hot chick who hunts moose from airplanes. Her rallies are dominated by men, maybe 2/3 men. Her favorable/unfavorables are now 32/41, a far cry from what they were a month ago. In its endorsement of Obama for President, the Kansas City Star wrote: "Despite his age and previous health problems, McCain chose a vice presidential candidate who is so clearly unqualified for high office that the thought of her stepping into the presidency is frightening." Hardly a ringing endorsement of Palin.

This ' event' for Palin would have been a make or break for her. If McCain had won.....she'd had an illustrious political career so in essence she was ' using' McCain to further herself.

But, as we see McCain will ,in all probability ,loose.....and she's beginning to look a bit foolish...she's done. Probably can't get a job as a dog catcher after this is all said and done.

The blog rumorville is that both Hefner and Flynt have offered her very lucrative "modeling" offers- and are debating that after the Repubs/McCain throw her under the bus as their excuse for losing- which one she will appear in Playboy or Hustler... :???:

i think the fear has evaporated into derision. go ahead and convince yourself she's the real deal but from the polls it looks like you're the one who's out of step.

I do not think it is fear at all, They are extremly jealous of her wit and intelligence, and know they cannot beat her one on one so they gang up and try to discredit her in any way they can.
Notice our resident libs follow suit with ther own little tidbits, with the exception of kolo who just spouts off as usual with out making any sense as long as she can post something   Probably the most jealous of all because Sarah has her beat not only in intelligence but in looks and personality as well, plus has a husband and kids, while poor ole kolo has only herself and her misery. (poor baby)

Earlier today I saw a website listing some of the newspapers that have come out for Obama. Almost every one of them mentioned that McCain's choice of Sarah Palin was a factor in them NOT endorsing him. Almost across the board they said it made them question his judgment. And that's what McCain had going for him early in this race: his judgment.....and experience. After picking her, McCain wasn't able to seriously question Obama's experience.

Just shows how out of touch they are with the REAL people of
this country. People like Sarah Palin.

I'm sick of people in politics that have lost touch with the real world.
Sarah Palin IS THE REAL WORLD, like it or not.

What they have done to her is just plain mean-spirited--like
much of our country has become.

"mean spirited" What a joke. In 2000 was George W. Bush spreading rumors that McCain had a black child with a mistress mean spirited? That he was "unstable" because of the torture he endured in North Vietnam? That he didn't deserve all the medals he won for Vietnam; everyone got them, you know? Did you scream and complain then about mean spirits??

I agree that there's lots of mean spirited people around, but don't pretend they're all after Sarah Palin. There's a whole lot of them after Obama, too. You know: He's a Mulsim, he's a terrorist, he's not an American, he hates America....... Those are mean spriited lies. At least no one on here is lying about Sarah Palin. She is what she is. She may be a likeable person, but she's not ready to be President of the United States.

Sarah Palin has turned into a nighmare for the Republican Party. She strokes the flames of racial intolerance and fear. Shame on McCain for allowing that to go on in his name.

Liberals just cannot stand the fact that there is a vp candidate who did not graduate from one of the Ivy League colleges.......and who is not a screaming womens' lib abortion promoter! Get over it! Common sense, honesty, and a good work ethic are things that have been sadly lacking in our government.......and all are strong attributes of Sarah Palin.

Better a Sarah Palin who may or may not be 'ready' to take over the presidency than an unknown who keeps his records hidden and has one of the most liberal big spending records for the extremely limited time he actually has spent in his current job in the Senate, Barack Obama, as candidate for the top spot on the ticket of the Democrats!!!!

Your accusations of racial intolerance promoted by Sarah Palin are typical of that sort of accusation by liberals, in the lack of any proof.

"Honesty" You are in la la land. She claimed the Troopergate report cleared her of any charges! That's an out and out lie.

Well, I’m very very pleased to be cleared of any legal wrongdoing … any hint of any kind of unethical activity there.

http://community.adn.com/adn/node/132625

And it's not the only time she made that dishonest claim. She also pressured Public Safety Commissioner Monegan to fire a state trooper for personal reasons. When he didn't, she fired him. Worse, she refused to help fund his budget for public safety when he didn't fire the trooper. Public Safety! Was it compromised because of her personal vendetta?

Obama is at the head of Dem ticket because registered Dems turned out for him. Palin is the Republican VP ticket because John McCain picked her. There's only a few million voters difference there.

"Ivy League" Joe Biden graduated from the University of Delaware....in four years. The lovely Sarah? She didn't do so well.

Her hubby wants to and is part and parcel to a group who wants to succeed from the USA....

There is a reason he voted against the infanticide bill.
>> There is a reason he voted No on the constitutional ban of same-sex marriage.
>> There is a reason he voted No on banning partial birth abortion.

There is a reason he voted No on confirming Justices Roberts

>>
>>
>> Let's take a look at the practice he wanted to continue. The 5

>> (Remember this is a live baby)
>> B. The baby's leg is pulled out into the birth canal.
>> C. The abortionist delivers the baby's entire body, except for

>> D. The abortionist jams scissors into the baby's skull. The
>> scissors are then opened to enlarge the hole.
>> E. The scissors are removed and a suction catheter is inserted.
>> The child's brains are sucked out, causing the skull to collapse. The dead

>>
>>
>> God help him.
>>
>>
>> There is a reason Obama opposed the parental notification law.

>>
>> 1 Samuel 1:18 ' When that day comes, you will cry out for

>>
>>
>> Here is what we know for sure.
>>
>>
>> God is not schizophrenic
>>
>>
>> He would not tell one person to vote for Obama and one to vote

>> nation,
>> 1. Whose value system should be placed on the nation.
>>
>>
>> 2. Who should determine that this is the right value system for
>> the nation?

>>
>>
>> Blessings,
>> Huntley Brown

I suppose you would classify this mean spirited?

Excellent post. Too bad the people that need to know this can't get past the image of their chosen one.
