McCain Aide Rips Tabloid Report
By Howard Kurtz
ST. PAUL -- John McCain's top strategist today denounced a report in the National Enquirer, hours after it was published, as "disgraceful."

"The smearing of the Palin family must end," spokesman Steve Schmidt said in an e-mail distributed to journalists.

The Enquirer, which exposed John Edwards's extramarital affair, cited unnamed sources in alleging that the Alaska governor had an affair with a business associate of her "fisherman husband," Todd Palin -- the story doesn't say when -- and that he found out and severed relations with the man.

"The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Governor Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false," Schmidt said. "It is a vicious lie. Governor Palin is the most popular governor in the country. She is a proven leader, an accomplished executive, a champion for ethics reform, and a fighter against corruption. The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it."

The mainstream media might well have ignored the unsubstantiated allegation, as they did for eight months in the Edwards saga. But the McCain's team quick response in defending the Arizona senator's running mate had the effect, intentionally or otherwise, of giving the story more prominence.

Schmidt, who told The Washington Post Tuesday that the news media are "on a mission to destroy" Palin, lumped the media and tabloids together in his blast against the Enquirer.

The supermarket tabloid also deals with the pregnancy of Palin's 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, which the governor acknowledged Monday. The tabloid quotes an insider as saying that the governor wanted to announce that Bristol was expecting and had set a wedding date before McCain went public with his vice-presidential choice. But, the story says, the baby's father, high school student Levi Johnston, balked at the plan.

Sarah Palin has displaced Barack, Britney, Lindsay and other celebs on the covers of the 4 major tabloid magazines coming out tomorrow. See the covers now!

Slideshows: Tabloid Covers About Sarah Palin | Sarah Palin's Photo Scrapbook

In advance copies of the covers, obtained by Fox 29, Palin is the big story on People, the National Enquirer, Ok Magazine and US Weekly.

The Alaska Governor is appearing on the covers along with troubled actor David Duchovny and new mama Halle Berry.

The National Enquirer touts "Sarah Palin's Dark Secrets" as a "world exclusive." Us Weekly promises "new embarrassing secrets" for the mother of five.

People and OK Magazine take a softer approach, focusing on Palin's "family drama."

Be careful that post is enough to get it pulled by OT. After all you said something about his wife.
If you don't want to get poofed you have to talk about 17 yr olds who are from the conservative side- then you can say all you want.

Thing is that the Nat'l Enq has of late been the most accurate on many lead stories.

They had enough law suits over the years that now they're gonna make sure they get it right.

If the Enquirer turns up anything on Palin, legit or not, do you think the Democrat's reaction will be the same as it was with Edwards, or do you think they'll be hypocrites?

Actually Denny- many days when I'm on here I do have a hard job- taking care of between 1-4 grandkids while their parents work...Oldtimers Day Care... You want to come help change diapers :???:

Its something my parents and my wifes parents did for us- their parents did before them- and I think it helped a lot in bringing up the kids, rather than going into a daycare or to a babysitter- so I decided when I retired I'd do the same for my kids which sometimes I think I shortchanged with all the time put in pursuing my career....
When I have just the older ones- I can take them with me when I'm doing something- but with the two little ones I'm more housebound...

One of the things thats so much more lacking in this country anymore that I believe is creating some of our problems is the involvement of family- much of which has been created by the scattering of the population in order to pursue their careers..
Some folks only get to see their Grandkids once or twice a year- I'm going to take advantage of the opportunity I got....

The older ones are little problem and in a lot of ways help...They're getting to the age where they can help fencing, babsysitting, working cows and everything...

The little one is pretty easy too- as she's in the eat-sleep-poop age and spends a lot of time sleeping....

The 4 month old is something else tho-- she's one of those that don't want to miss anything- inherited her grandpas German bullheadedness- and really tests your patience... She's one of those that keeps going until she is such a crab- she has to be rassled down to take a nap- and rassled down to go to sleep at night...And I've had her this afternoon- and get her part of the night as grandma and the girls have a "doings" they want to attend.....

And your right- I wouldn't trade it for a million bucks...

Actually the 4 month old loves to sit on my knee and watch tv or the computer monitor- especially gets chuckling good when I tell her stories about neurotic folks that can't figure out who they are and that are so paranoid they have to hide behind multiple identities
She'll be typing for me in a month or two
