Palin Pleased with Obama's Energy Plan

Includes Alaska's Natural Gas Reserves

No. 08-135

August 4, 2008, Fairbanks, Alaska - Governor Sarah Palin today responded to the energy plan put forward by the presumptive Democratic nominee for President, Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

“I am pleased to see Senator Obama acknowledge the huge potential Alaska’s natural gas reserves represent in terms of clean energy and sound jobs,” Governor Palin said. “The steps taken by the Alaska State Legislature this past week demonstrate that we are ready, willing and able to supply the energy our nation needs.”

In a speech given in Lansing, Michigan, Senator Obama called for the completion of the Alaska natural gas pipeline, stating, “Over the next five years, we should also lease more of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska for oil and gas production. And we should also tap more of our substantial natural gas reserves and work with the Canadian government to finally build the Alaska natural gas pipeline, delivering clean natural gas and creating good jobs in the process.”

Governor Palin also acknowledged the Senator’s proposal to offer $1,000 rebates to those struggling with the high cost of energy.

“We in Alaska feel that crunch and are taking steps to address it right here at home,” Governor Palin said. “This is a tool that must be on the table to buy us time until our long-term energy plans can be put into place. We have already enjoyed the support of Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, and it is gratifying to see Senator Obama get on board.”

The Governor did question the means to pay for Obama’s proposed rebate — a windfall profits tax on oil companies. In Alaska, the state’s resource valuation system, ACES, provides strong incentives for companies to re-invest their profits in new production.

“Windfall profits taxes alone prevent additional investment in domestic production. Without new supplies from American reserves, our dependency and addiction to foreign sources of oil will continue,” Governor Palin said.

No I think he agrees with McSame- that there should be no drilling in ANWR- but that they should develop the National Petroleum Reserve area of Alaska first- that was set aside for that use.....

Looks like she supports Obama's windfall profits tax too-even doing the same as he proposed and putting a windsfall state tax on oil companies- with a 1 time payment back to all residents to cover the high cost of gas
Along with she has threatened to evict or "nationalize" some Big Oil companies, instate refineries, and natural gas plants until they agreed to increase production......

Palin raised taxes on oil companies–big operators in Alaska included ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips and BP–doubling state revenue from the oil patch to $10 billion in the fiscal year ended June 30. Alaska now gets about $49 of each $120-a-barrel of crude pulled from its fields, according to the Seattle Times. ConocoPhillips has said the state gets about 75% of the price of each barrel. The Alaska tax jump has been termed a windfall-profit tax. Congressional Republicans including John McCain have opposed windfall-profits taxes from oil companies on a national level, while Barack Obama has supported it. And she is using royalties from oil-and-natural gas production to give all residents a one-time payment of $1,200 to defray the cost of gasoline.

So now she's ok by you, OT?

Oh she's 30 times better than McSame- because she has 30 years less experience in corruption and scandal in D.C than he does....

Only Problem is its still McSame running- and they're running on the same-o neocon policies of Bush- that haven't worked....

It's been termed a windfall profits tax by who? How can it be a windfall profits tax, or any other termed profits tax when the PROFITS aren't being taxed? Looks to me that she just raised the price of the crude that the State of Alaska was selling, which would be consistent with her fudiciary responsibility as Alaska's Governor to manage resources.

Yes, sex is that activity that I used to do on a regular basis.

Seriously, are the profits being taxed or not? What is really happening, a tax on profits or raising the price of a raw commodity to more accurately reflect the world market?

Part of her job as governor is to manage her state's resources. If the price of crude on the world market doubles, which it more than did, what kind of manager would she be if she didn't raise the prices of Alaska's crude as well?

Calling her actions a windfall profits tax is misleading, and not truthful.

I don't give a crap who wrote it, I stand by my earlier comment. Is it a tax on profits or a price raise?
