In essence Pat is saying to cross your fingers when giving your oath to God- so that when they get sick you can just dump them for whatever hot new thing that comes along---and thats all OK....

-"to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part."

Pat Robertson says Alzheimer's makes divorce OK

Updated: Fri Sep. 16 2011 09:33:11

The Associated Press

Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson told his "700 Club" viewers that divorcing a spouse with Alzheimer's is justifiable because the disease is "a kind of death."

During the portion of the show where the one-time Republican presidential candidate takes questions from viewers, Robertson was asked what advice a man should give to a friend who began seeing another woman after his wife started suffering from the incurable neurological disorder.

"I know it sounds cruel, but if he's going to do something, he should divorce her and start all over again, but make sure she has custodial care and somebody looking after her," Robertson said.

The chairman of the Christian Broadcasting Network, which airs the "700 Club," said he wouldn't "put a guilt trip" on anyone who divorces a spouse who suffers from the illness, but added, "Get some ethicist besides me to give you the answer."

Most Christian denominations at least discourage divorce, citing Jesus' words in the Gospel of Mark that equate divorce and remarriage with adultery.

Terry Meeuwsen, Robertson's co-host, asked him about couples' marriage vows to take care of each other "for better or for worse" and "in sickness and in health."

"If you respect that vow, you say 'til death do us part,'" Robertson said during the Tuesday broadcast. "This is a kind of death."

A network spokesman said Wednesday that Robertson had no further statement.

Divorce is uncommon among couples where one partner is suffering from Alzheimer's, said Beth Kallmyer, director of constituent services for the Alzheimer's Association, which provides resources to sufferers and their families.

"We don't hear a lot of people saying 'I'm going to get divorced,'" she told The Associated Press. "Families typically respond the way they do to any other fatal disease."

The stress can be significant in marriages though, Kallmyer said, because it results in the gradual loss of a person's mental faculties.

"The caregiving can be really stressful on a couple of levels," she said. "There's the physical level. There's also the emotional level of feeling like you're losing that person you love."

As a result, she said, it's important for couples to make decisions about care together in the early stages of the illness, when its effects aren't as prominent.

Old Pat is not only a terrible politician but he's a terrible example of preacher...And Preachers shouldn't be Politicians.....
Luckily most relatives/spouses I've known of Alzheimers patients don't follow his preaching...

Two bystanders wounded in S.F. police shooting

147 .According to KCBS and Bay City News Service, two bystanders were hit by gunfire after an officer-involved shooting in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood early this morning.

According to police, at 2:06 a.m., officers located a wanted person in the 400 block of Broadway. The suspect ran away from police and produced a weapon, they said.

Officers then fired at the suspect, who was not hit. However, two bystanders were hit by the gunfire. They were taken to a hospital to be treated for their injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, according to police.

The suspect, who was not wounded, was taken into custody. The suspect's weapon was recovered, police said.

Police did not have information available about how many officers were involved in the shooting or how many rounds were fired

and now the rightwings religious leader-

As a result of his seeking political office, he no longer serves in an official role for any church.

Robertson was born in Lexington, Virginia, into a prominent political family. His parents were Absalom Willis Robertson, a Democratic United States Senator,

While usually associated with the political right, Pat Robertson has recently begun endorsing environmental causes. He appears in a commercial with Al Sharpton, joking about this, and urging people to join the We can Solve it Campaign against global warming

He also suggested that Americans would broadly accept socialism

politician/broadcaster Pat Robertson has been wrong before.. must have been the upbringing.., and one could say he is getting downright liberal in his old age..

Its a disgusting statement that he made and it is disgusting to throw us conservatives in with him.

2 wrongs never make a right!

I agree.. his answer is pathetic.. if ever need advice, I'll turn to the actual scriptures for guidance on this...

if you look at his recent activities, he isn't exactly acting conservative.. or like a religious leader.

his answer to a spiritual question is pathetic.. in times of trouble, many need comfort and assurances.. not a way out..

in my opinion it would take a selfish person to even ask the question..

while this is a good article on divorce, If a person has a problem in their marriage instead of looking at ways out, they should be guided to read about marriage and commitment instead..

Divorce is only allowed for a limited number of grounds that are found in the Old Testament and affirmed in the New Testament:

Adultery (in Deuteronomy 24:1, affirmed by Jesus in Matthew 19)

Emotional and physical neglect (in Exodus 21:10-11, affirmed by Paul in 1 Corinthians 7)

Abandonment and abuse (included in neglect, as affirmed in 1 Corinthians 7)

Are you trying to say that for 50 years old Pat hasn't been connected to and a leader of the Fundamentalist Right Wing Christian movement? :???:

BRG- its not me saying that he's a right wing fundamentalist Christian leader - and bunching him with conservatives-- its almost the entire world that has known and accepted that for many years......

From the same source as Steve
Marion Gordon "Pat" Robertson (born March 22, 1930) is a media mogul, television evangelist, ex-Baptist minister and businessman who is politically aligned with the Christian Right in the United States.

The Christian Broadcasting Network, or CBN, is a fundamentalist Christian television broadcasting network in the United States. Its headquarters and main studios are in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

CBN was founded by televangelist Pat Robertson in 1961 using a religious variety program format that has been successfully used in religious broadcasting ever since. On December 3, 2007, Robertson resigned as chief executive of CBN; he was succeeded by his son, Gordon.

His media and financial resources make him a recognized, influential, and controversial public voice for conservative Christianity in the United States.

The Christian right is a term used predominantly in the United States of America to describe "right-wing" Christian political groups that are characterized by their strong support of social conservative policies. In the U.S. The Christian Right is an informal coalition of numerous groups, chiefly evangelicals and the Roman Catholic Church. It is strongest in the South, where it comprises the core of the Republican Party. Besides conservative positions on domestic issues such as opposition to the legalization of abortion and same-sex marriage, the Christian Right is a strong supporter of Israel in foreign affairs.

I knew an old cowboy that was married and had children. His wife went off the deep end, and was committed to an insane asylum. He waited several years for her to become normal again. She never did, and remained institutionalized from then on. He divorced her and married another lady, with whom he had more children. I was just a punk kid when he told me about this, but he asked, "Do you think what I did was wrong?" Probably thirty-five years has passed since he asked me this question, but I told him then I didn't think he did wrong. I feel the same way today. Each case should be decided on an individual basis.

He who is perfect may cast the first stone. :?

oldtimer was just feelin nasty and thought he could hit 2 birds with one rock with this one- whack on 2 of his favorite subjects- conservatives and christians. if it would have just been George Bush instead of Pat Robertson he could have hit his trifecta!

and look nobody backed up robertson on this............. WOW, it is interesting what happens when you actually have principles and follow them rather than a party or a person! if you mention something about a leftwingnut oldtimer either ignors or defends but never agrees and says that they were wrong!

LET'S SEE since Oldtimer thinks all Conservatives believe what Pat R. believes then I'm guessing all Obama supporters including Oldtimer believes this

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's pastor for the last 20 years at the Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's south side, has a long history of what even Obama's campaign aides concede is "inflammatory rhetoric," including the assertion that the United States brought on the 9/11 attacks with its own "terrorism."

Oh and have you Damned America lately Oldtimer as that is what Obama's/your Pastor Wright seems to think his followers should do.

See what happens Oldtimer when you try to tie everyone to one persons beliefs. The liberals are not without their wingnuts and Obama your hero has connections to A LOT of them so you must too right Oldtimer. Think about that the next time you want to slam us OK Oldtimer.

No Tam- I do not believe Robertson represents all conservatives--- but that there is a huge conservative following of some of his nutcase thinking- who live and dwell upon his every word....And since he says it in the name of religion- they'll believe every word he says...

Robertson started the Christian Coalition, a 1.7 million member Christian right organization that campaigned mostly for conservative candidates.

Probably a couple more followers than the Rev. Wright...
What is comical is that both the Rev. Wright and Pat Robertson are similar in blaming 9/11 on our country and our actions :

9/13/01 on Robertsons 700 Club show:
Jerry Falwell said God may have allowed what the nation deserved because of moral decay and said Americans should have an attitude of repentance before God and asking for God's protection. He specifically listed the ACLU, abortionists, feminists, gays, and the People For the American way as sharing in the blame. Pat Robertson responded with agreement.
.

Less than two weeks after Hurricane Katrina killed 1,836 people, Robertson implied on the September 12th broadcast of The 700 Club that the storm was God's punishment in response to America's abortion policy. He suggested that September 11 and the disaster in New Orleans "could... be connected in some way".

OT, any idea the number of people that follow the Black Liberation Theology teachings that Rev. Wright preached?

More or less than the 1.7 million number you mentioned?

Pat Robertson might be A religious leader but you said he is THE RIGHTWINGS RELIGIOUS LEADER as if he leads all rightwingers. And your do have a record of painting everyone on the Conservative side with a WIDE BRUSH with anything to make the Right look bad so you don't have to except your hero's failures.

And you find it comical that these two wingnuts think the US is to blame for 911. What are you sick? Never mind don't bother answering that. It is not comical it is disgusting that religious leaders in the US blame their own country for the acts of religious Muslim terrorists trying to kill Christians.

Maybe Old Comrade has embraced the teachings of ShamWow and unenlightened boy? Thankfully, they have dropped off the radar....for now....and I think I played a big part in ShamWow leaving, after I challenged him to take a long hard look at what he accomplished here in a year, he never posted again, and the other dim bulb must have gotten tired of beating a dead horse.

Myself, I feel sorry for Old Soviet's wife and kids. Can you imagine having to live with or be related to such an arrogant, pompous, brain dead, out of touch windbag such as he? The thought should make you cringe. I've known folks like him all my life, and the funny thing is, there are never any wet eyes at their funerals.

I showed how"recently" Pat Robertson has become liberal.. supporting liberal causes..

his past was extremely conservative.. until recently, ,... his actions and words recently are not considered conservative values.. but liberal views..

this comment isn't an old comment dredged up but a "recent" one.. and it co-insides with his recent conversion to other liberal views..

even an old preacher can be led astray... his liberal secular comment is pathetic.. and represents what is wrong with liberal views of their interpretation of the Bible..

I would agree each decision is different.. and advice for each situation should be different.. and I would never try to judge another's decision in such a difficult time..
but we live in an age of easy answers.. and easy divorce..

When a person needs to make a difficult decision and wants that decision based on advice from the Bible, clergy should not look for the easiest answer .. but help to give the person spiritual strength to do the right thing, and understand what the Bible says on divorce.

Today, Patti, the Reagan's daughter, is often at her mother's side. She has written about her father's battle with Alzheimer's disease, and its effects on her mother: "My mother's eyes are frequently such deep wells that I have to look away."

"I think she means that when she looks at me, she sees a deep sadness," Nancy says.

Patti also writes about the eyes of Alzheimer's patients: "In the early stages of Alzheimer's, the eyes have a weariness, a veil of fear. I used to see my father's eyes simultaneously plead and hold firm. Slowly, sometimes over months, sometimes over years, the eyes stop pleading … A resignation, an acceptance of distance, strangeness, a life far from home. You know the look when you see it. And the only mercy is that the fear seems to have subsided."

I pray my loved ones never have to go through this.

Soap your friend did what was best for him. untill someone has delt with mental illness long term they have no room to judge what is the best course of action.
I hope he has come to terms with his guilt and let it go.

I really do pray for OT he has gotten so hate filled and mean spirited it has to be such a sad life he lives.
