Pellet Stoves

My daughter and her husband just bought a pellet stove for their basement. It seemed to really warm the basement and the floor for
them, but today she said it burned one and a half bags of pellets
already. Is this normal?

If so, that's pretty disappointing as they sure don't give the pellets
away...

If anyone uses a pellet stove, I would appreciate your comments.
I wonder if they have it set right. :???:

Around here they sell them from what I've seen there are alot of them for sale 1 year old. Most here burn corn in them but if it's not clean and dry they plug up and they are a pain in the butt to keep them going.

when it really cold( below zero every morning but that most the winter) we go thru a 40lb sack aday, right now with mornings in the 25 degree range and may be a high in the low 50 we use 1/3 to 1/2 sack aday. it the main heat for our whole house and I can pick up pellets 50 miles away at the mill in Ovid Id. But pellets are up $25 from last year and $25 from the year before up to $150 /ton

I have a tiny pellet stove in the big house that I am currently renting and I am burning about a bag a day just to keep the chill outta the air!! on a rreally cold day, I burn about a bag and a half!! have the kids check the settings and make sure they are burning it at the lowest setting possible!! also, make sure they have the blower/fan in good shape as this really helps circulate the heat!!

Well even at the sharply higher prices you are paying, that comes to only $3.00 a day in the dead of winter! That sounds pretty good to me.

I would expect that you have a lot less mess and work than we do with our wood furnace!!!

I lived in a house that had one of them as the main source for half of the house, other was wood stove. I found that if you keep it cleaned out, and run the pellet delivery and fan speed at the right rate, it helps cut down on consumption of the pellets.

WE JUST INSTALLED ONE LATE THIS SUMMER WE FOUND THAT THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN THE TYPE OF PELLETS USED. THE GUY WE BOUGHT THE STOVE FROM GAVE US A BAG TO TRY OUT THE STOVE. THESE PELLETS WORKED GREAT. BUT WHEN IT CAME TIME TO ORDER WE GOT THE CHEAPER PELLETS THINKING WE WERE SAVING MONEY. THEY DIDN'T BURN GOOD LOTS OF SAWDUST IN THE ASHES THAT WASN'T BURNT ALSO THE EXHAUSTER HAD SAW DUST COMING OUT OF IT. NOT NORMAL
THESE CHEAPER PELLETS ALSO SMOKED UP THE GLASS FASTER. WE HAD THE COMPANY COME AND PICK UP THE TWO PALLETS OF PELLETS AND BOUGHT THE EXPENSIVE PELLETS. USE LESS PELLETS NOW( EVEN THOUGH IT IS COLDER). THE PELLETS WE ARE USING NOW ARE FIR AND BOY DOES IT THROW OUT THE BTU'S. IF WE WOULD HAVE USED THE CHEAPER PELLETS WE WOULD HAVE BURNED MORE AND POSSIBLY COST MORE IN THE END.

the fir pellets I use are the cheapest sround and have alway worked better in my stove then some of the more expencive ones. Other people don't like the Red-E-Fuel and have better luck with Lignets

A few years ago we lived in a house that's only heat was a pellet stove. It wasn't a real large house but we could fill the pellet holder and it would last all day long. We usually only had it on low and sometimes medium. We had a wood stove before that and prefered the pellet stove. It would run longer and was much easier to keep up.

If ya do what was mentioned here...the stove will burn better...We run 2 pellot stoves...in our big old uninsulated house...and get along just fine on the no.2 setting, and burning the better pellots and cleaning the ash bin regularly, a bag will last about 24hrs. Once we start the stoves, they run 24-7 and then the house will stay at an even temp...and that helps also so you don't have to keep turning it up or down...slow and steady works great for us. Just takes some trial and error to get it to work like you want..Good luck.
