Pelosi has pocketed nearly twice as much lobbyist cash as Boehner

If you read this weekend’s New York Times’ hit job on would-be Speaker John Boehner and his “lobbyist friends,” you might think, as the reporter clearly thinks, that John Boehner is cozier with lobbyists than most powerful politicians are.

But did you know:

•Nancy Pelosi has raised almost twice as much money from lobbyists this election as Boehner has?
•At least 18 House Democrats have raised more lobbyist cash this election than Boehner has.
•Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid have pocketed more lobbyist cash in the past 18 months than Boehner has raised in the past 6 elections, combined?

Here’s the heart of the article, with emphasis added:

While many lawmakers in each party have networks of donors, lobbyists and former aides who now represent corporate interests, Mr. Boehner’s ties seem especially deep.

Yes, to Times reporter Eric Lipton, Boehner’s lobbyist ties seem especially deep. What if we tried to use facts and data, rather than the reporter’s impression, to measure Boehner’s lobbyist ties against those of other politicians.

Let’s start with campaign contributions. The Times writes:

[Lobbyists] have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to his campaigns

Here’s what they mean: from 1999 until today, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, Boehner has raised $299,490 from lobbyists.

For comparison, Harry Reid, Blanche Lincoln, and Chuck Schumer have each raised more money from lobbyists in this cycle alone.

This election cycle, Boehner is not even in the top 20 recipients of lobbyist cash. He’s raised less than $40,000 from lobbyists this cycle — compared to Nancy Pelosi’s $71,000 from lobbyists.

Sure, Boehner is too close to lobbyists, but the money trail says he isn’t closer than Nancy Pelosi.

Robert Gibbs Really Wants You To Read NYT’s Harsh Piece On John Boehner
by Glynnis MacNicol | 9:58 am, September 12th, 2010
Here’s a preview of how the Midterm media battles will be waged. The New York Times is running a front page feature on House Minority leader John Boehner (“a 60-year-old, perpetually tanned, sharply tailored, chain-smoking golfer”) the man recently cast as President Obama’s main foe in the Republican party, and Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has taken to Twitter to tell you how much he really wants you to read it.
The article details Boehner’s “especially tight ties with a circle of lobbyists and former aides representing some of the nation’s biggest businesses, including Goldman Sachs, Google, Citigroup, R. J. Reynolds, MillerCoors and UPS” and speculates on how these ties influence his political decisions in dubious ways.

From 2000 to 2007, Mr. Boehner flew at least 45 times, often with his wife, Debbie, on corporate jets provided by companies including R. J. Reynolds. (As required, Mr. Boehner reimbursed part of the costs.) In addition, over the last decade he has taken 41 other trips paid for by corporate sponsors or industry groups, often to popular golf spots. That makes him one of the top House beneficiaries of such travel, which has recently been curbed as a result of changes in ethics rules.

It goes on, but you get the picture, and the NYT has provided a handy little chart of ‘Boehner’s K-Street Cabinet.’ Robert Gibbs, meanwhile, is very keen you read it. In a case of what might be called overplaying your Twitter, Gibbs has tweeted about the story no less than four times in the last hour, including expressing concern that the black and white chart doesn’t give proper due to Boehner’s tan. Feels like a bit too much of a good thing on Gibbs’ part, but perhaps he’s been inspired by the recent success of Sarah Palin and is hoping to wield his Twitter account in a similar manner. Maybe cluster twitters are the new negative campaign ad
.

When is this Administration going to GROW UP, stop the grade school crap and get working on putting people back to work.

Van Hollen was just on Fox commenting about how they were not going after Boehner with these articles and ads but after "the Republican policies he is pushing". First why are the Dems attacking for something they keep claiming the Republicans don't have? :? And second I didn't know Boehner's tan was a republican policy.

Democrats maintain solid cash edge heading into 2010 midterms

1. The three Democratic campaign committees ended March with approximately $22 million more in the bank than their Republican counterparts, a financial edge that party strategists hope will insulate them from considerable losses in the coming midterm elections.

we can see who the BIG money is controlling..
