Pentagon: furlough of 800,000 civilians pending

The Pentagon notified Congress on Wednesday it will be furloughing its civilian workforce of 800,000 employees if sequestration goes into effect March 1.

Defense officials have warned lawmakers that sequestration will devastate the military and lead to a hollow force, but the civilian furloughs will be one of the first major impacts felt by the across-the-board cuts.

The Pentagon furloughs will affect civilians across the country. Pentagon officials have said that civilians could face up to 22 days of furloughs, one per week, through the end of the fiscal year in September. The employees would receive 30 days' notice before being furloughed.

“We are doing everything possible to limit the worst effects on DOD personnel — but I regret that our flexibility within the law is extremely limited,” Defense Secretary Leon Panetta wrote in a message to the department. “The president has used his legal authority to exempt military personnel funding from sequestration, but we have no legal authority to exempt civilian personnel funding from reductions.”

And, of course, the never-ending-campaigner and divider-in-chief stays true to form pitting Americans against Americans.

Obama will be on the road again next week with campaign-style events arguing that Republicans are at fault for the cuts, while the GOP blames the White House for the sequester.

“Republicans in Congress face a simple choice,” the president said Tuesday. “Are they willing to compromise to protect vital investments in education and healthcare and national security and all the jobs that depend on them? Or would they rather put hundreds of thousands of jobs and our entire economy at risk just to protect a few special interest tax loopholes that benefit only the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations?”

Barry could always propose cutting $100 Billion of waste, instead of cuttting the $44 Billion and still be up $56 Billion in spending

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The U.S. government could save tens of billions of dollars a year by streamlining a bloated federal bureaucracy, according to a report Tuesday from the Government Accountability Office.

snip

Sen. Tom Coburn, the Oklahoma Republican who requested the report, estimates that the duplicative programs cost the government at least $100 billion annually.

The first thing to note is that the $85 billion figure that gets bandied about overstates this year's cuts due to sequestration by about $40 billion. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) in its February 2013 report on the budget outlook, "Discretionary outlays will drop by $35 billion and mandatory spending will be reduced by $9 billion this year as a direct result of those procedures [sequestration]; additional reductions in outlays attributable to the cuts in 2013 funding will occur in later years."

Good..... let it happen.... scrutinize these supervisor to a supervisor to a supervisor jobs and cut them out completely. Its time to cut out the waste and just like TexasBred said, maybe they will have less time to go to porn sites, facebook, etc... etc.....

The USA has to file a CAFR which lists all its assets.... as people have had to get into their savings or stock or whatever.... the USA needs to do the same....

Sell off some of their AOL stock, we don't need controlling interest in it. with 60 trillion in the CAFR, its time to reduce it (and stop giving it to the central bankers).

Everybody remember the old charges of starving children, or balancing the budget on the backs of the poor? Every cut is a disaster to Democrats and RINOs.

The local news said today it does cut the funding for childrens insurance.... BUT they are funding that program with social security funds.... I'm all for cutting out childrens programs OUT of the social security fund. Find the money someplace else.

You know, i am pretty offended at how badly you all are treating ALL civilian employees! And what is even worse is how you self righteous, arrogant knuckleheads just lump everyone in together! I work my a$$ off to feed my family. I drive thousands of miles each month taking care of critical equipment that keeps our air force pilots safe as they train to protect you sorry excuses for humans. Should we just let them fly blind? Should we just stop keeping them trained to be ready for any threat? Should we just fire me and my co-workers, park the planes and wave the white flag? You know-it-all types ought'a think a tad before spewing your thoughts out your backsides. I dont waste time, drink coffee all day, flirt, play video games or WATCH PORN!!!!!!!

For you to say i do is lnsulting as hell and i'd give you about a half a second to take it back if you were standing in front of me and then one of us would be needing help to get up off our back! Just type whatever you'd like and hide behind your keyboard, but you would not get away with saying it if i was standing in front of you!

Texasbred and Mogal have entirely lost my respect. I work damn hard and have 2 kids to feed. Who decided you to were in charge of deciding if my kids go hungry? Who ever did picked a couple of narrow minded, arrogant boneheads who sure as hell paint with a broad brush. I havent taken a dime of assistance through 2 layoffs and losing my own electrical business to the economy going south. I have worked 4 jobs and taken care of my cattle just to pay the bills. Now that i have a good job supporting our nations warriors, i don't need either of you or any one else to give me thier sacred approval to know i make a difference. Take your opinion, turn it sideways and stick it somewhere!

Just one more reason to stay the hell out of political bull! Ya'll are a bunch of shallow, narrow minded, ignorant, clueless, chickenshit cowards! If you can say i am a porn-watching, flirting, waste of skin then i figure you opened the door for what i just wrote about you! Remember folks, just because you CAN write something doesnt mean you SHOULD. And if you go ahead and write crap anyway, be prepared to reap the crop you sow! :?

Bu the way, i am a staunch conservetive and want our country out of debt. I am all for cuts when they make sense. But i will be one of those 800000 workers effected. And since i am not a civil servant, but a contractor, i wont get days off. I will get layed off. Glad that makes you happy!

Leaning H I list respect for you. Why should I work 8 days a week so the government can waste my money! You may work hard for your money to feed your family, but so do I. You may be one of the needed hard working civillian workers, but trust me there are many out there that do nothing. I get so tired of those that want everyone else to pull a little more weight than them. Get a second or third job like I have in lean times!!!!!

Go read my post again! I work as a contractor for the air force, build fence on my days off, wire about 15 homes a year, build and maintain 3/4 of the pumps in this valley, neighbor and day work for ranches around me and take care of my own little place! AND YOU LOST RESPECT FOR ME? Read my post again! I havent asked for anything from any government agency, EVER!!! And i pull my weight everyday. What amazes me is why you get to decide if my job is important! Who said your job is needed? It isnt any of my dang business what you do for a living! But for you to throw me under the bus because EVERY GOVERNMENT WORKER SUCKS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE. And i am incensed to be lumped in when you have no idea about me, my work ethic or my character!!! Wow! You lost respect for me! :? Unbelieveable Ranch Hand! I figure thats says one hell of a lot more about you than it does me! Go read my post and then read this one again as well and explain to me where i "don't pull my weight" and "waste your money" and need a "2nd or 3rd job".   Ranch Hand doesnt respect me? :???: It's good to know where a guys friends are! Apparently, i have none here!

It's called MAKING A POINT! But i guess that one went over your head huh?

Let me say it slowly..... I DO NOT LIKE BEING CALLED A USELESS, PORN-WATCHING, LAZY, FACEBOOK USING FLIRT. I take great pride in how hard i work. I enjoy what i do. And i tried to make the point that ALL GOVERNMENT WORKERS ARE NOT WORTHY OF YOUR SCORN! Since i got lumped in with all the scum, i figured you wouldnt mind if i did the same!

Well I lost respect over your rant and jumping down someone else's throat because many of the government workers not all need to lose their jobs. But because of the liberal mindset of money growing on trees you lost your job. I work for a rancher who may lay me off do to the less cash flow caused by higher taxes. So you are not alone, but in stead of freaking out on posters about losing my job I will look for another if need be. The reason you have no friends might be your short fuse. We don't know you and this is the Internet forum so grow some hair on your chest and ignore the posts that bother you. Life does go on.......

Would it bother you Ranch Hand, if someone said you watch porn and flirt and screw off all day at the place you work? Would it make you just a tad bit angry to be called useless and accussed of not pulling your weight? Would you just let lies and accusations slide? Or would you defend yourself? I have great friends here on ranchers, folks i really look up to and value thier friendship. People like Soapweed, Gcreek, Shortgrass, RA, Justin, Nicky, Katrina, Yanuck and a bunch more. I guess you arent on that list sadly. Because you have no respect for me. That must mean you'd be fine if you were accussed of the things i was tonight!

My "Short Fuse" got lit tonight by folks who said i was something i am not. AND I WILL NEVER SIT BACK AND ALLOW SOMEBODY TO IMPUNE MY CHARACTER AND ATTACK MY WORK ETHIC. EVER! I hope you dont lose your job due to higher taxes! I hope you always have the means to feed your family! I bet you are a hard working great employee and a fine human being! I would simply like those same things. And you can't respect that? :? I bet if you lived in my desert or if i lived in your area we'd probably be good friends. But that would require you to respect me and you cannot.

I do agree with you about one small thing.......life does go on. My chest hair has nothing to do with that. My life will go on and your lack of respect won't make one chest hair worth of difference to me. Let me know when you have the party to celebrate all those useless government pukes losing thier jobs. And let me know when you reach a point in your own life where you'd stand up for yourself if someone accused you of the wonderful things i got slamed with tonight.

I readily admit to losing my temper tonight. I felt like i had a pretty good reason to be upset. My attempts to get some of ya'll to re-think your positions didnt go over too well. And all i have managed to do is to reinforce why i should stay out of this forum. I did not intend to do anything more than stick up for myself and others like me. If you missed my point in shooting back so harshly, i apologize and am sorry. Ya'll are not cowards or knuckleheads. I wish i wasnt lumped in as a porn watcher and a flirt. Difference of opinion and the freedom to disagree is what makes America great. I very respectfully disagree with your opinion of me and many other folks who work for the federal government. We arent congressmen. We arent the president on another golf trip. We arent buracrats who waste money and time. We ARE fathers and mothers who worry about losing our jobs because no one back in washington, Democrats or Republicans, governs or is responsible. We are proud of our work to support our service members as they stand at the tip of the spear guarding the gate. We are not freeloaders and get kinda bent when called that. :? But i am a face and a voice and a life in a political game of chicken. We gotta make cuts and we gotta spend less. If i lose my job but we save the country, i can sure live with that. Sadly, i don't believe my job is why we are in the trouble we are in!

But if you believe i am what some of ya'll wrote, then here's where we part ways. I am just a guy who happens to love my family and my heritage and my cows and my God. (Not neccasarily in that order) What they think of me has no comparrison to what you may think. Have a fine evening. I am sorry if my defense of my character crossed any lines. It wasnt meant to.

I think we can all understand that you're not lazy. And I can tell you H that I was without steady work for a while a few years ago, and it is just hard on a person. Being the bread winner and having little ones dependent on you compounds it all a 100 fold. I was more sensitive to a lot of things and I can understand you being upset. But I hope when all the smoke clears, you might see that I don't think anyone was calling you out. You sound very appreciative of your job and I bet you do bust your butt. I'm appreciative of mine as well and probably work circles around many who do the same thing.

I think we can all agree that their is waste in our government. And I think you have probably seen some of that in action. I hope much of the true waste could be cut out. But, I'm concerned that the reasons that it was allowed in the first place will be the reason that the correct cuts won't be made. It is a sick game where the scum needs to be called out. We don't have the money to spend at the rate we're spending. The government spending can't be sheltered while the rest of America free falls into depression. Something has to happen. The increasing taxes are crushing many other hard working Americans also.

I think one of the saddest things is that the current financial/regulatory environment won't allow you to make a go of it with your own company, and your forced to be at the whim of politicians. People are really showing disgust at that as well, but the divider in chief is working his magic still, and it appears to be working.

I imagine you will have several here praying for you and your family.

Wishing you the best.

If there are lay-offs of civilian contractors it's exactly what Obama wants, because he damn sure has money to send 16 F16 Fighter Jets and 200 Abrams Tanks to Egypt (Muslim Brotherhood?), along with 1.6 Billion in aid, with much more aid going to other countries in the region. Israel just got screwed and American Contractors just got raped. Did anyone take the lefts advice of throwing up, or peeing yourself to prevent it?
