Is that a calf catcher mounted on the side of the fourwheeler? I've seen those is magazines. If that is one how does it work? (I understand the concept just wondering if it works without breaking a calfs leg. )

The "Calf Catcher" is made by:

New Tec, Inc.
1008 Locust Street
Hull, Iowa 51239-0715
Phone: 866-369-0505
Webpage: www.calfid.com

From our experiences using it for a little over two weeks, I would sure give it a "thumbs up." Peach Blossom uses it every day, and can do by herself what it usually took two people doing before. Two riders would go out and one would keep the cow away while the other would tag.

She is pretty adept at sneaking around on the contraption, driving up over a calf, and quickly slamming the front doors. Until yesterday nothing had even tried to put pressure on the cage. Yesterday, Peach Blossom reports that one of our habitual criminal cows did try to push the cage, but was unsuccessful. The cow got her head over the top of the gate, so Peach popped her upon the protruding portion of nose and promptly reminded her that it was unacceptable behavior. The cow backed off and no further problems were encountered.

The price on the "Calf Catcher" is approximately $1350 for the basic cage, and other bells and whistles are available. A tool box for tags can be mounted on the side, and other options are a sling for carrying calves and a scale assembly for weighing baby calves. Some Iowa cattle producer did have a pretty good idea, even if it isn't a very "cowboy" type deal. Peach reminds me that tagging isn't too much of a "cowboy" deal, either.
