We have been a bit busy and kind of remiss in posting. These are a few of some of what has been going on here.

We put in a couple of hundred trees in early May. The Country has a tree planter that is really slick. 200 trees in 45 minutes or so.

This big guy has two hens with him and a couple of nests full of chicks.

Our corn went in yesterday (the neighbour custom seeded), we picked up seed (oats/barley) and our swath grazing will go in over the next month or so (oats/barley). Filled the drill to get started (we use a 5 gallon drill fill and the drill holds 2 mini bulk bags). We have a 80 new rented acres still to break and seed.
Helped the neighbour move cows on Sunday, went to church and managed to get on the horse for a couple of hours afterwards riding double with our 3 year old daughter to actually figure out how many cows are left to calve. We start calving May 1st (by turnout date) and are 92% complete. Sorry I forgot the camera.
The house is coming as basement floor and framing are done and power and gas went on this week. Just drywall and basement windows to go.

Those are some great pics RSL, thanks for sharing. Great looking family you have there.
What are you planning with the corn, are you going to graze it?
I bet all that snow is paying dividends already.

Yep I agree, mighty fine photo's. It is starting to finally look like spring up there with lots to entertain a photographer. Keep on posting the pics.

We are planning to graze the corn. We have minimal equipment, minimal time, minimal money and are working on doing as little as humanly possible. I remain to be convinced on the corn. The costs are very high compared to our regular program of native range and swath grazing, but I might be able to run a lot more cows on the same land base. Is it sustainable? I don't know, hence the small experiment. There are a lot of folks in my area doing grazing corn as their sole source of feed for winter. I am closely tracking time and costs to see if we will continue in the future. Corn is a lot cheaper than drylotting, but I know it can't compete with my daily cost to swath graze unless I can run a lot more cows on the same ground.

As for the family, I give full credit to the importance of really good maternal genetics.
