Rushes are candy to the cows on cold winter days like this.

They will slick them right up and beg for more.

The water stays open but there is ice all around.

The bred heifers kind of like this stuff, and think of me as their friend because I brought it to them. :)

Normally, these trees provide shelter from the prevailing northwest winds. Today the wind was bitter cold out of the south so I fed on the "wrong" side of the trees. Here is a glimpse of the wind coming through a crack in the barricade.

Looks like ya ought'a issue those cows ice skates to drink from that trough! :D Maybe they'd be really good at it and you could start an outfit where ya travel to arena's nationwide, like Disney on ice. You would have to clean up the manure and teach em' not to eat the little kids popcorn> Hope ya warm up soon and if you'd get the wind to stop blowing, we'd all like ya more!

Say, I'll bet they'll follow you anywhere, and they look nice. Not looking foreward to calving if these weather patterns continue.

I'm wishing that I could just plug in a heater or heat tape on all our tanks...depending on which direction they are and which direction the wind is blowing, some tanks are partially open then others are frozeup solid! It's getting to be a little old around here trying to keep water open,,but afterall this is winter...Good photo's Soapweed..thanks

There is nothing tougher than a prairie bovine.
I think what you are calling "rushes" is what we call "rip-gut". Coarse tall swamp grass that grows in the lowest wettest places on the meadows.

It doesn't look coarse enough to be "bullrushes".

You are right, it is rip-gut. We have bull rushes, too, and sometimes both categories get mixed in the same bale. On nice days, the cows tend to turn up their noses to even think I would bring them groceries such as this disguised as "hay." On these cold winter days, they think I'm a pretty good guy even if this is all I have along on the pickup.

That's a nice windbreak. Cattle will sure use that. I like that coarse grass with a little alfalfa. We have a pipe fed by a spring that runs always. Water about 45 degrees all year. Run over goes down hill to a dam.
