Cows on this mainly bush pasture have lots of good grass yet
lushtame.jpg

But still they prefer to eat "weeds" - my kind of cow!!:D
First they ate out a stinging nettle/hemp nettle patch

Then a Canada thistle patch

Then started on the willow trees

Chewed willow stumps and look at the grass in the background - are these cows crazy?

Hazard of checking cows in the dense bush - got a bit too close to this black frame score 10 cow... hey, wait a minute that's not a cow.... its a cow moose

Other wildlife in the area - part of a group of 8 muley bucks currently hiding out on my place

Just to show I do have the occasional black animal that isn't a moose. If every bred cow you bought for $485 had a calf like this at under 4 months old this business would be profitable :D

A severe storm came through our community tonight hopefully it hasn't done too much damage.

Looking east the leading edge is ahead of us now leaving it mighty dark

Hail to the chief!

The calm after the storm - I hope all the other crops survived the storm as well as these oats did.

Seems it was a bad storm, 2 miles south of me more severe hail cut a swath through my Hutterite neighbors land. I drove past at least 10 quarters ranging from all the grain heads off to completely flattened to the ground crops. On the north half of the colony they look to have lost half their crops - didn't see the south end. Colony gardens wiped out too. I was visiting with them just the other day and they were telling me they don't insure crop so it will be quite a loss. In their religion they feel God creates the weather and he will also create solutions for them. Part of this solution is that the colonies help each other out - this colony was grazing 150 cows for a colony out east that was droughted out and they had already promised their straw crop to another colony who wasn't going to have any crop again due to drought. I have quite an admiration for these hard working people and hope they will be helped in the manner they have helped others.

Hey Grassfarmer, things look good at you place. I must have been fairly close today. How far are you off the highway that goes from Alsike to Sylvan? Thanks for the photo tour.

HWY 20 Per? when it goes through Rimbey we are 12 miles west and a little south. Should've called in!

Would have, but I had a date with my crew and cows for a mooove. Best I could do was think about you. It will happen one of these times.

We have done well for rain lately RSL, 4.6 inch in July and 3.25 in August already - but only an inch in both May and June killed us for the season. This late rain keeps us green but doesn't grow a lot of volume. Particularly with the tame grass pasture it seems if you don't get enough moisture through the usual rapid growth period (May 10 - July 10th in this area) you never get the production back. Meadow Brome has been the exception it has kept growing back and of course the quack grass was about the only thing growing in May and June. Legumes were poor early but are now doing better with the moisture. Timothy has done badly as usual - the only plant I want to eradicate from my pastures.

Nice cattle and pretty country. Hope the hail and wind stays away from everyone. Sure can tear stuff up. Love the wildlife! Thanks! :D
