Pictures of today's branding

I decided to quit babying myself about my sore shoulder, so we continued on with our brandings this afternoon. Saddletramp, Peach Blossom and I gathered 111 pairs and put them in an enclosure made from portable corral panels. We sorted the cows away from the calves, and started branding at about 4 p.m. At five o'clock, the Kosmo Kid arrived after a day in school, and at six o'clock our oldest boy came along after a day's work at his welding shop. We got done a little after seven, and at least it wasn't dark yet. Everything went pretty good, and the weather was perfect. At one time, it looked like we might get rained upon, but that shower passed over without incident.

Great pictures! Thank you. Glad branding went well yesterday for you. That is like our branding crew-the family and have several different days at it. Works for us. We still have a couple days of branding remaining, but is raining this a.m. so that is just wonderful-what is a few days of delay due to moisture. :) What a great supportive family!

Yours is truly a class operation, the cattle, the equipment and the people.
Thanks for sharing it with us. I think I have your branding operation figured out. The boys draging calves, Saddletramp, and Peach Blossom working them and Soapweed recording it :) Leaves you to observe and evaluate and make future management decisions , right ?

Hope you have a great summer. We are looking for rain tonight and tomorrow. That will make for a better summer here.

"soggy" calves!!! Don't ya just love all those goofy words they come up with in the cattle biz???

We used 2 that drove me NUTZO.

" Square on all four corners"...now what'da hell???

and my favorite we used for all NE sale advertisements for the ranch

" Where cowmen buy bulls" WHAT??? CowMEN??? Pleeeeese....

I have always said there is a thesis paper for someone on the lingo in the cattle business and how it reflects on our language and even the markets.

Every trade has it's own lingo. We know what soggy calves are, and green cattle, and broken mouth cows, etc, etc. What does a smooth mouth cow feel like ? What would a guy who runs cows be ? A cow runner ? So, when you are working calves what kind of work do you have them doing? Do they have to be a certain age before you work them ?

I am sure there are many more examples.

Anyone get Drovers?
Every spring they run a contest for best cattle-related innovations. I don't think the prize is much, but for some of the winners I've seen in past years, you could be a shoe-in Soapweed.
