Everyone I've talked to is wondering when the weather will straighten out. Sure have the months mixed up this year when it comes to the weather. Here's a couple April shots and a couple of lines I scratched out pertaining to the situation.

April Morning

Where oh where did March go
With it’s temperatures so warm & nice
The calendar shows it’s April
Tho I had to look at it twice.

The prairie grass is all covered
With ice and a blanket of snow
When I went to check the cows last night
The ridges were starting to blow

The sun reflects off the snowbanks
So brightly it hurts my eyes
As I walk I hear the snow crunch
In the distance a young calf cries

The temperature shows 10 above
Thats a normal wintertime low
Summer is only 2 months away
Seems we’ve still got some winter to go

Last month was in the 80’s
The grass was just starting to grow
Seems the only thing that stays consistent
Is the wind, and it sure likes to blow

The moisture is surely needed
Though I tend to prefer it in rain
Cause calving in this kind of weather
Might drive a fellar insane

The weather will warm eventually
And the grass will continue it’s strife
Mother nature is just reminding you
You’re a pawn, in the chess game called “life”.

You have my word no more snow pictures this year! Only warm sunny, happy ones! These pictures just made the poem pop into my head. Too much thinkin in old blue again when I'm rolling out those hay bales!  Gotta get that darn radio fixed!

Great poem!!!!!!!!!!!

Soooooo true

It's winter here, too

Kicked cows out on summer range

Havin' to feed them is really strange.

Running out of hay, how we fret!

The weaners in the top lot are muddy and wet!

Sposed' to warm up and melt the snow

We can quit feeding cows and watch the grass grow.

So true, EmptyPockets, we are just pawns in the chess game of life and are reminded of it constantly.

Thanks for sharing. I think if anyone posts sunshine and warm weather I will &*)^$#%&*((&^%$^*&*(())*(& (that is, until we get some)

Empty pockets,
this is what fills those empty threads, I am looking at the hay pile that isn't there, the snow on the ground, listening to Al Gore tell me that this is global warming and tonight we are supposed to set a record low.

Great poem, Empty Pockets.
Enjoyed the pictures and sure do like the hilly country you live

I really like your poem and pictures, Empty Pockets. It was almost worth going through this wintry weather, just to see your fine photography and words of inspiration that resulted from this chilly blast. Keep that kind of self-expression coming. :)

That was very nice EmptyPockets. You hit the nail on the head with that one! It is a raw old April so far, but I do happen to remember April 5-6 1997 very well, and this is nothing compared to that one. I hope that was the worst blizzard I ever see. I don't remember if your area had it as bad then, but it was a doozy here. Then it got down to fifteen below zero after the blizzard ended. That was a real kick in the teeth. :x

But anyway nice job with the poem, and I always enjoy pictures from you.

It was ten above here this AM. Kinda chilly. :!: Thankfully we have very little snow here.

Boy do I remember that April in 97. It was after the worst winter I ever went thru. Came in November and never let up. Then that April blizzard hit and handed our Arses to us. I remember hoping our temps would get up to zero. Let's hope we don't see that ever again in April!

Thanks everyone, glad you enjoyed the poem. Have a good calving season---- Later---EP

It hit us that first Fri in April, slow moving cell, lasted forever, was at our peak in calving, after dumping 3' snow on us, and came on us again, then followed by -20, didn't find all the dead calves until the snow melted. That was a horrible, horrible storm and that is when we switched to FALL. :!:

It was spotty here, when we finally dug ourselves out (took about a week) the neighbors a few miles N of us were wondering where we've been...how come so much snow on the pickup :? They didn't get it nearly as bad as we did :x

Hanta Yo, that is the price you have to pay sometimes for living up in the pretty country. Come to think of it, fire could be thrown in there too.
