What is everyone using to vaccinate calves for pinkeye? The last two years we have fought it terrible, trying for a different approach this year.

our tenant runs several hundred head of cattle on different pastures.he told me that there are several different {strains} of pink-eye.

if he gets a case on our farm, then he has a vet out to swab the eye and sends the culture to a lab at Iowa State University.

the lab then advises the vetrinarian on which particular strain to treat on our farm.

he has pretty much cleared it up,,in all of his herds.

hope this helps.

Last year, just a good mineral program and Fly Killer Kover on the mineral feeder.

The year before. Novartis Pinkeye Shield XT4, just one shot.
Plus Fly Killer Kover on feeder and minerals
Plus Vigilante Boluses. (reduce flies)

I'm fortunate I haven't had that much problem with pinkeye here in recent years. A lot of guys use Vision 7 20/20 at branding time for their 7-way shot. A good mineral and fly control program certainly will help.

What breed of cattle are getting pinkeye?

Pinkeye can be caused by IBR. Flies are really an irritant.
We had a pinkeye crisis in Hereford calves years ago and I'm
sure it was from IBR.

We have been fighting pinkeye in feeders for several years now.

In the past we never saw it in the winter, but now it happens every winter. Unless we vaccinate. It's not just a summer thing. I'm not sure why it's getting so common, but suspect that cash strapped cow calf owners are being cheap with their mineral and vaccination programs.

The vaccine works for us. We've started buying another batch of feeders, and have the vaccine ordered already.

We used the XT4 vaccine last year, and it worked okay, wasn't a bad fly year though. But, never had any to treat.

My salesman convinced me to use the Piliguard Triview this year. We'll see if it works any better, since it was about $12 more per bottle.
