WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Pirates off the eastern coast of Africa fired on U.S. sailors Saturday as they tried to reach the lifeboat where an American captain is being held, a U.S. official familiar with the situation told CNN.

The gunfire forced the sailors, who did not return fire, to turn back, the official said.

Where was the navy when the Captain escaped the other night?

Why did they not take action at that time? Were they too far away from the raft? Couldn't see at night? Ordered not to? Not prepared for the opportunity?

An attack against al-Shabab camps in southern Somalia would mark the administration's first military strike outside the Iraq and Afghanistan-Pakistan war zones. The White House discussions highlight the challenges facing the Obama team as it attempts to distance itself from the Bush administration, which conducted at least five military strikes in Somalia. The new administration is still defining its rationale for undertaking sensitive operations in countries where the United States is not at war.

Some in the Defense Department have been frustrated by what they see as a failure to act.

Once upon a time we killed and captured pirates. Today, it's all more complicated. Attorney General Eric Holder has declined to say whether the kidnappers of the American captain will be "brought to justice" by the U.S. "I'm not sure exactly what would happen next," declares the chief law-enforcement official of the world's superpower. But some things we can say for certain. Obviously, if the United States Navy hanged some eye-patched, peg-legged blackguard from the yardarm or made him walk the plank, pious senators would rise to denounce an America that no longer lived up to its highest ideals, and the network talking-heads would argue that Plankgate was recruiting more and more young men to the pirates' cause, and judges would rule that pirates were entitled to the protections of the U.S. Constitution and that their peg legs had to be replaced by high-tech prosthetic limbs at taxpayer expense.

it is a tough shot.. your on a moving ship, shooting at a fair distance at a person on a moving boat.. add in wind, even for a experienced marksman it's a tough shot, and even if you get the shot, that only gets you one of the bastards,

but your emotions seem to be heading in the "right" direction.

What makes you think my response is pure ' emotion'?

Shoot the b'tards!!

I heard on the news, from some ship owner being interview, that they, the ships, sailed with the ladders DOWN, it was standard procedure. WHY?

Who's gonna need a ladder in the middle of the ocean in such a hurry that you can't wait a few minutes for it to be let down?

I also heard that the life boat was drifting closer to the Puntland coast. I wonder why the Navy ship is not between the lifeboat and the coast?

And with the other 2 ships prob already there, why not put the lifeboat in a triangle with the 3 boats??.

I think that's the wisest response yet regarding this incident. You must have heard somebody else say that?

It's easy for us to have all the answers when we don't really know all that's going on. For example, I wonder why in the hell Obama seems to want to make a law enforcement issue out of this when I think it should be a military issue.

I think we need to keep Eric Holder and the Justice Department out of it and treat it like an act of war. Let the Navy Seals handle it. If something goes wrong, give the ransom money to the Captain's family. But be damn sure all of the pirates are DEAD when it's over.

We not only have a duty to the Captain, but we also have a duty to try to be sure this doesn't happen again. The best way to avoid it in the future is not with threats of prosecution for the pirates, but with them knowing they will meet a quick and certain death - on the spot.

Thats probably the most intelligent and honest comment made about this subject...
From thousands of miles away- everyone is playing a hostage situation expert- or SWAT commander-or Monday morning Brett Favre....
I have no doubts some of the worlds finest in handling such situations are sitting right there now- and it will be handled as best as can possible be done.....

Now that that's over for TExAN.....back to the topic

You know that this lot of skinny guys with tablecloths wrapped around their middles ARE NOT the ones handling the bank accounts and money from all this randsom. I heard the amt of $8M to date, mentioned.

Who is/would be the FAT CAT behind all this?

Puntland has been a pain in the azz since the time of the Pharohs......it's all they know to do it seems. Kinda like the Middle East...all they know it to fight.

The African version of the Hatfields-McCoys. They've prob forgot ' why' they are fighting....but they just know that Daddy did it...and so should they.

I have no idea what capabilities the FBI has for surveillance involving boats-- but after having dealt with them on other hostage/barricade situations- I am confident they are monitoring every word said in that boat- and probably have a thermal image of each person in it identified and separated so they know where they are at any given time....
A mouse couldn't fart in there now without an Agent knowing exactly where it came from...

I've heard estimates ranging between $50 million and $200 million over the last few years. I think you're right, kola - we need to find out where this money is going. It's almost certain that some of it is going to finance other terrorist acts.
