what a beautiful day for a branding....mild breeze, good friends, tons of kids, coolers of beer (yes, sw, silver bullet among others :D ) and a mess load of chili, cowboy chili, cornbread, salads and donuts afterwards!!

two of the many ropers here today...all of the riders got their chance to rope as we had over 300 head to brand and it HAD to be done today since a few of the brothers are having their brandings tomorrow!! The gentleman on the left is Jim Powers...one of the hubby's best friends and the other gentleman is one of the hubby's 11 brothers, Huey!

and at the end of the day, the littlest ones still had the energy to pick a wrestling match with Aunt Gus!! sheesh...she thought the calves were tough to wrestle...she had these kids all whipped til uncle chief came along and gave the little ones "a helping hand"

actually took over 80 pix, but ya know how dial up is
no pix of all the food, though, since I was busy grilling up hamburgers while all the rest were eating!! Sure had a great day...this is one of the few days of the year when I really do not mind the hustle and bustle of having over 50 people in my place!!

Nice pictures!! Looks like a good time was had by all. Thanks for sharing.

what a pretty girl demo is, I was one of those "tough" chicks out in the corrals wrestling calves too. I still have a hard time when I have to be one of the ladies and help get dinner.

I do all mine in the roasters and crock pots and such so I can still be outside most of the day.

Nice animals there... same colour as mine. lol. :p Our brandings here are never that much fun. lol. The onl yway I get to do 'the dirty work' i swhen a calf is a little small or when one of the hands miss the catch. lol. Then I 'get' to sneak up behiind and hold'em there. Last year we had a 600 pounder jump the chute... since I was the youngest and diddn't get to do any fun stuff yet, I had to sneak up behind him, and when I grabbed the sucker someone shouted "give'r hell!!!" It was a challenge... but a calf has never got away from the hockey playing, reckless, smoothe talking cowboy as myself, as of yet. lol. Dad said to put that in. lol.

Have a great day!!

On edit: I forgot to say that they made me the 'lucky guy' this year. lol. Dad's brother is out here right no wand we're setting a date for branding. lol. This year there is one less guy up front and one extra in the back so I 'get to see some action' this year. lol. Dad moved me because I know each calf, when i twas born and the cow better than him. lol. This year I am "taggart". lol. I got that cause I read too many Louis L'amour novels-one a day. lol And Taggart is my favourite. lol We have lil names for each position. lol. Last year I was Dodger. lol. I got called that cause
I ran the clubby bull up the alley (my old job) and got kicked in the wheels. I was a lil jumpy and it stuck. lol. Now I have 2 show steers from him-fat and sassy. lol. I tag, Dad is brandy (the drink too...) Uncle is "nuts", he gets the oysters cleaned too- we called him that cause he wears a cowboy hat to ledzepplin. lol. And my cousin is Dodger this year. lol.

I just got in from helping move, and I learned that sleep depression, caffeine and sugar don't mix. lol.

Have a good one!

Thanks for all the kind words from everybody. Ranchwife is quite a photographer as I never even noticed her taking pictures, so imagine my surprise when I finally got to see all of them.

We had a really good crew show up and all pretty good hands too. No wrecks either and even had a couple of first time to a branding colts being roped off of. Mother nature was nice to us also as it was a sunny day and not even a breeze was blowing which in almost forty years here I can count those kind of days on one hand. This morning it is raining and cancelled my brother's branding. So I feel pretty lucky to have gotten mine done.

I'll steal the camera and get a picture of the photographer at our next branding.

About the branding smoke...

I have always loved it!!

I remember huffing it as I would carry nuts when I was little, and later when I was wrestling. I however can not smoke a cigarette to save my soul. lol :? I know it's weird, and weirder to admit it, but I yam what I yam.

Hubby had a nice branding yesterday... I cleaned house. Today it is rainy but we are supposed to go to one this afternoon. I don't think I will be doing much more than baby duty, and letting the kids help me wrestle one or two. I love their enthusiasm. They were really mad yesterday when they woke up singing about branding and found Dad and our oldest already gone. Hope they always like it this much.

Take Care!

Ranchwife,

It was farther down the road, and over the hill at Twin Bridges, but there was an ol' hand named "Bing" I worked with back in about '90 or so. A reata man, if I recall, funny old bird. Branded with him at the "Round Barn". Martin Anseth was there, too, but he's been cleared out of that country for years.

Might you know "Bing"?

How about Ed Olind north of you in Harrison?

Badlands.

we have had years when help here was pretty scarce, too, but we lucked out the last few years...simply get out word of mouth in these parts about a branding and the folks start showing up!! I was amazed at the folks who showed up "just because we heard you were branding!!" :D
