pix of a fun branding

Here's what we did yesterday. Headed and heeled the calves and switched the head rope to the front feet and held them with horses. Nobody worked too hard and it was a grand way to celebrate spring! :D

Cheyenne river breaks we gathered in.

100_0399.jpg

100_0399.jpg

Gettin' started.

100_0421.jpg

One strung out.

100_0428.jpg

Pretty good shot of a heel loop. Notice the top of the loop hasn't fallen down yet. Unfortunately, it was a miss, but a good effort. maybe a better picture than a heel shot!

100_0433.jpg

One coming out and getting ready to tip and flop and get the ropes arranged.

100_0435.jpg

Gettin' the ropes hooked juussst right.

100_0437.jpg

Waitin' for the crew to do their work.

100_0439.jpg

We even let the boss rope! Got to watch him make a pretty fair ride on "ol' paint" too! I marked him 14 on my side.

100_0453.jpg

Unfortunately, one had to be wrestled the "modern" way.

100_0463.jpg

This feller was raised in Montana and the horse came from Montana, but they both had the good fortune to come to SD!

100_0466.jpg

This is what Jinglebob does best at a branding. Eatin' oysters. He was cookin' them too, after he removed them from the "shell"! He had a little trouble with the guys runnin' the irons as they kept turning the stove up to where it was hard to get a good job done on cookin' the oysters. I guess some people just don't have their priorities right!

Hope you enjoyed the pix. :)

Looks like nice country and a great bunch of guys!!

You'd have had a hard time keeping your hat on your head around
here today, Jinglebob. It was really windy. Someone mentioned a
branding picture on the Photo contest where everyone wore caps. I
reckon the wind has something to do with it!!!!

Good pictures, all, Jinglebob!! Thanks!!!

(Don't you know to eat with your mount closed...)  :p

Mount closed? My horse was no where in sight! :???:

It can't get too windy for me to not wear my hat. I might have to hook my earflaps up, but I don't wear caps. I hate caps! Besides, if you've got a good custom built and fit one, wind ain't a problem. You just put 'er on lock!

What, you don't like good beef? I'll bet you eat chicken don't you? Ever watch what a chicken pecks out of the dirt. Cows don't do that. There ain't any part of a cow trhat wouldn't be good to eat, compared with a nast ol' chicken. And I like gizzards too!

Reminds me of the woman who asked a cowboy what his favortie cut of beef was. He told her the tounge.

She said, "I'd never eat anything that came out of a cows mouth!'

He replied, "Don't suppose you've ever eaten an egg, huh?"

Nice pictures, Jinglebob. Looks like you had a good crew and a fun day.

A few years ago, someone asked my sister what mountain oysters tasted like. Her immediate and honest reply was, "Ketchup." :)

Why would you put anything in your mouth thats called fowl? I would rather eat beef than anything else... just not the reproductive parts.

Eggs are just aborted chicken fetus :D :D

How far downstream on the Cheyenne? today I "got" to see a new piece of it. Loaded a no-till drill and tractor at "the project".
I took the S. Fairburn road, very scenic.
I have seen a few ranch countries before, most in my experience don't come with that "deep" of a wintering grounds.

Thanks for the great pix JB, makes me wish I was there. 'Cept, of course.... I didn't see any beer. Beer goes good with oysters and branding smoke.
Beautiful country and good lookin' cattle.

Observations:

1 Cool!

2 How do you get a bunch of guys together that aren't in such a terrible hurry to get through branding, like most places. These guys look like they could just enjoy the day, and be in no rush.

3 I don't see any tags in these calves ears. That tells me they were range calved, and they sure must have a good climate to have them calved out and branded this early. We don't brand our big bunch till early June.

4 Gotta love that Cheyenne River country.

5 Awesome pictures. Who is the mis-placed Buckaroo?
Maybe if you don't want to say on here, you could PM me with the name of the guy that owns the ranch. I am curious. Always curious. He takes dang good care of his country, from looking at the grass cover on it. Shouldn't be worrying about grass tetany there. Our area is way more green, but we finally got some moisture to grow some grass.

6 Good job Jinglebob.

About 80 miles west of Pierre. We gathered Mud Draw.

I did mention the "medicine' didn't I?

Yes, there was some beverages and there was no abuse. Nobody spilled a drop.

Ya gotta shop for your help in the local bar.
Guaranteed, if they're happy hanging out in the bar telling wild stories, they're going to be happy with a laid-back branding.
