1 Cool!

2 How do you get a bunch of guys together that aren't in such a terrible hurry to get through branding, like most places. These guys look like they could just enjoy the day, and be in no rush.

WE KIND OF ASK AROUND. ONLY TWO OF THE GUYS HAD NEVER SEEN OR DONE IT THIS WAY BEFORE. MOST ANYBODY WHO GOES AND DOES RANCH ROPING CAN DO THIS. AS FOR NOT GETTING IN A RUSH, YOU JUST GOT TO KEEP TALKING TO EACH OTHER AND TELLING YOURSELVES THAT IT IS OK TO SLOW DOWN AND ACTULLY ENJOY THE WORK.

3 I don't see any tags in these calves ears. That tells me they were range calved, and they sure must have a good climate to have them calved out and branded this early. We don't brand our big bunch till early June.
I AIN'T REAL SURE WHEN HE STARTED CALVING, BUT ALL THAT I SAW HAD SMALL WHITE READABLE TAGS IN THEIR EARS. MOST OF THE BRANDINGS AROUND HERE ARE JUST GOING GOOD RIGHT NOW. UNLESS IT RAINS SOME OUT, THERE WILL BE FEW TO GO TO UNTIL AFTER THIS NEXT WEEK.

4 Gotta love that Cheyenne River country.

5 Awesome pictures. Who is the mis-placed Buckaroo?
Maybe if you don't want to say on here, you could PM me with the name of the guy that owns the ranch. I am curious. Always curious. He takes dang good care of his country, from looking at the grass cover on it. Shouldn't be worrying about grass tetany there. Our area is way more green, but we finally got some moisture to grow some grass.

T CASTEEL. HE AND FAMILY RAISE SOME REAL NICE BLACK CATTLE OVER IN THE VALE COUNTRY. HE HAD SOME BUCKAROO FRIENDS IN COLLEGE AND EVEN WENT AND SPENT TIME IN THE GREAT BASIN, WORKING FOR A SPELL, I BELIEVE. HE'S A GOOD FELLER, A GOOD HAND AND WAS USING A RIATA FOR A SPELL. WE'LL BRAND AROUND 400 AT HIS PLACE THE END OF THE MONTH, USING THIS METHOD.

AS FOR THE RANCH, THE GUY HAS BEEN RUNNING IT FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS FOR AN OLDER, WIDOW LADY AND THEY HAVEN'T BEEN STOCKED FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS. SHE DIED AND HE BOUGHT THE COWS. PLACE JUST SOLD TO AN EASTERN GUY WHO WANTS A PLACE TO HUNT AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE FELLER IS GOING TO LET HIM STAY THERE AND RUN A FEW COWS AND TAKE GOOD CARE OF THE LAND.

WE HAVE DISCUSSED GETTING THE GUY TAUGHT THAT COWS AND WILDLIFE GO HAND IN HAND, SO IN A FEW YEARS, HE MAY GET TO RUN MORE CATTLE. HE IS A GOOD RANCH MANAGER AND THE ONLY DRAW BACK TO THAT PLACE, IS THAT IT'S AWFUL FAR FROM SCHOOLS FOR PEOPLE WITH KIDS. HE'S GOT A DAUGHTER WHO LIVES WITH THE MOTHER AND SHE IS OUT THERE WITH HIM EVERY CHANCE HE GETS. HE'S A GOOD FELLER.

6 Good job Jinglebob.

THANK YOU. :)

Ya gotta shop for your help in the local bar.
Guaranteed, if they're happy hanging out in the bar telling wild stories, they're going to be happy with a laid-back branding.

Mater of fact, very few of these would be found in a bar very often. I myself do not patronize many and bars would go broke if they had to survive off from me. But I sure do enjoy an adult beverage once in awhile and seems like most places, when you take a break there is only cold beer to quench your thirst, so that is what you drink, if you are thirsty. I'd prefer ice water, but hey, it ain't my branding to say.

Yesterday there was lemonaid. Another one, they will have tea and there is no beer until the work is done. I like that. I don't enjoy working around dangerous drinkers. They are always sorry for the wrecks, AFTERWARDS.

Matter of fact, I'd prefer bourbon and water to a beer. Doesn't make me sick and loggy like beer does. But there is just somethin' about the taste of calf fries cooked over a branding stove fire and beer that go together. :)

Who said anything about drinking?

The bar is for socializing. Your town must be bigger than mine if folks have somewhere else to go to shoot the breeze.
Our bar is usually patronized by folks too young to walk on up to those who are too old to die. We go to the bar about once a week and I think between the lesser half and myself, we might have had a six pack in the last three years.

My kids, earning quarters for the video game.

there is no beer until the work is done.
We have the same practice. At our branding, i brought just enough beer over to the corral that the guys could have one with lunch. Dan was surprised. "You brought beer over here already?!"
"No, just enough for lunch. The rest is at the house."

"Smart woman. You've done this before." :D

That Cheyenne River country is nice Winter country.

Nice grass.

I noticed the "flathat", too.

My Bro-in-law was on the SMS where Rapid Creek runs into the Cheyenne for a good number of years.

Now he is at Box Elder, but runs over to Philip to work the salebarn on sale day.

Jinglebob, I should have known that was T. C. from the pic. If it hadn't been over in that country, I might have figured it out myself. I knew he liked everthing Garcia, as our Vet calls it. He is a friend of T. C.'s too.

So you know that K. ranch some huh? I can see why the Florida outfit liked it too. I heard the water wasn't the best on it, but the scenery sure makes up for it.

When I go over to work cattle in the Jumpoff next time, I will have to take my camera. It is pretty scenic too.

I guess we sociolize at brandings as we don't have a town. Couple little villages and one has a small convienence store/bar, but I sure as hell don't hang out there much as the guy who owns the bar is a cranky ol' poop. His wifes a sweetheart and more than makes up for him, but I just don't like the atmospherer around a grouch. Or a bunch of drunks, for that matter, unless I am one of them too and that just don't seem to happen any more.

Sorry I musunderstood.

Better yet, take me and I will take MY camera and then you won't have to worry about not working while taking pictures.

Hey Tap, you better run up to Medora, at least for Saturday night. I think we are goiung to have some fiun and I think you need a good dose of that. :)

TC's branding is the day before. Better come down to it. I Know he'd enjoy your help. He always likes to have a few good hands around us gunsels. Might just be what the doctor ordered. :D

Jinglebob, I am so deep in jobs around here, that I may never get my head above water. I would love to have the time to go up to Medora with you. I will have to do that someday. That is a neat country to be sure.

I do not know T. C. personally, but know who he is, and he came up with the vet I mentioned one time when we bangs vaccinated. His pockets are probably still dragging on the ground from the cash they got out of their bred cows last fall. We didn't pay that much for the cows we bought, but I am wondering if we should have been selling cows instead of buying them.

I would probably embarass myself around the top hands you hang around anyway.   And you are invited up here anytime you have the urge.

Much as I love branding, I'd go nuts if that was the only time I got to sit and chat with people. Our town is about 80 people, so I guess that counts as a 'village', but we're a pretty sociable community, for the most part. :)
I honestly can't think of more than a single occasion when I've seen someone actually drunk at our bar... Drinking sure. But drunk? Nah. It's just not that kind of crowd. If someone is looking to tie one on, they're going to head to one of the bigger towns down the road for a crowd that's more "fun" anyway.

You better be careful what you say, I just may drop in sometime.

And these guys are no more top hands than anywhere probably. Just good hands.
