A passenger jet is heading down the runway, when all of a sudden it abruptly comes to a stop, turns around and returns to the gate. Eventually, after an hour-long wait, the flight finally takes off.

A concerned passenger asks a flight attendant, "What was the problem?"

"The pilot was bothered by a noise he heard in the engine," explained the flight attendant.

"I hope it's all sorted now," replied the nervous passenger.

"Oh yes, it's fine now, sir. It just took us a while to find a new pilot."

Reminds me of when I was in the army and on a flight from Japan to Korea. We boarded a C124 4 engine cargo plane. They ran the engines for about 20 minutes to warm them up and then gave it full throttle and released the brakes and down the runway we went, only to stop about 3/4 of the way and return to the starting point. There was not enough runway to get off the ground, so another try and we made it!
When I got to Korea I talked to another soldier that I knew that came earlier and on his flight from Japan one engine failed at about 20 miles from halfway and they had to shut off one on the other side, and return to Japan.
Later, when I was at Ft. Carson in Colorado, another man recalled his trip from Bangkok, Thailand. The airport there was ran by Australians. The Pilot, noticing oil leaking from one engine of the C124, hollered at a mechanic on the ground and pointing to the engine. The mechanic hollered back, " Oh! She'll make it, She'll make it, you only have to go 500 miles.
