Poland

I assume everyone has heard that Ms. Rice signed the agreement with Poland to host our Patriot Missiles yesterday. What I didn't realize was that it also said we'll defend them if attacked. If Russia launches, that puts us at war.

A few years ago there were articles in Popular Science/Mechanics about a laser system to shoot missiles. They talked about it being mounted in a 747 the next year. While I was in Iraq I read about tests where they actually shot russian rockets and even artillery shells. Given what I read a few years ago, the status then, it should be operational now. It sounds like we could move our Patriots into Poland, then if Russia launches, we could shoot missiles out of the sky with the plane in the air.

Imagine Russia sending an ICBM with a Nuke to show the world a lesson, only to have it shot out of the sky. All of a sudden the balance of power changes.

I'm not sure if I buy the fact that this is to defend Europe against rogue nations like Iran, not Russia. If that was true, wouldn't it make more sense to have them in Iraq? Just look at a map. Either way, I support it. The important thing to keep in mind is that these are defensive only. We don't need to worry about offensive on the ground, one submarine could take out a small country from anywhere we decide to put it.

Yeah, I believe somewhere I heard patriots specificaly mentioned. I'm not sure if they woud be efefctive against an ICBM flying over. I don't know what their range is. I'm no expert on what kind of interceptors we have, but it seems more likely to have something equivelent to what the National Guard has in Alaska.
