Pope Francis rebukes religious militants during visit to Albania

(CNN) -- During a trip to the mostly Muslim nation of Albania, Pope Francis rebuked militants who act in the name of religion, saying no one can act as the "armor of God."

The Pope lauded Albanians during a visit to the capital of Tirana, calling the Balkan nation one that proves "a peaceful and fruitful coexistence between persons and communities of believers of different religions is not only desirable, but possible and realistic."

The pontiff didn't refer to any militant group by name. He denounced those who have perverted religious spirit and who are engaged in violence that prevents harmony between people of different faiths.

Last month, he denounced ISIS, the Islamist militant group seeking to establish a caliphate in the Middle East. He called ISIS an "unjust aggressor"

On Sunday, he again spoke harshly against religious warriors.

"Let no one consider themselves to be the 'armor' of God while planning and carrying out acts of violence and oppression," Pope Francis told diplomats at the presidential palace. "May no one use religion as a pretext for actions against human dignity and against the fundamental rights of every man and woman, above all, the right to life and the right of everyone to religious freedom."

The pontiff pointed to the religious peace in Albania, a country relatively new to the concept of religious freedom. The population is 56% Muslim, 10% Catholic and 7% Orthodox, according to the CIA Factbook. The climate of respect and trust between those groups is a "precious gift," the pontiff said.

I'm frankly surprised that the Fatman is aligning himself with the Pope.

I thought this Pope was supposed to have a connection to Nazism. But the Fatman understands all there is to know about Nazis, Aryan Nations, Skinheads, Freemen, Randy Weaver, Timothy McVeigh, anarchists, KKK'rs, etc., etc.

There have been rumors, stories, and allegations of the Catholic Church's and several Popes ties to the Nazi's for years... The current Pope's is probably the least credible since he was only 8 years old when WWII ended...

And none of the message I've seen him deliver supports any of the bigoted hate and fear message of those folks- in fact it is just the opposite... He is probably the most Libertarian and tolerant of different folks/beliefs of any of the Popes I can remember...

In fact he could easily be speaking about and chastising these very groups you name
Nazis, Aryan Nations, Skinheads, Freemen, Randy Weaver, Timothy McVeigh, anarchists, KKK'rs, etc., etc
.
(and that I so oppose) that hide behind religion/God in their anti Semitism, anti Muslim, racist hate, bigotry, and fearmongering spiels and promotion of violence to anyone different than them...

OT? Is it true that the Quran instructs Muslims to do the evil things they are doing?

The Second Vatican Council taught that Muslims worship the one true God:

The Church regards with esteem also the Muslims. They adore the one God, living and subsisting in himself; merciful and all-powerful, the Creator of heaven and earth, who has spoken to men; they take pains to submit wholeheartedly to even his inscrutable decrees, just as Abraham, with whom the faith of Islam takes pleasure in linking itself, submitted to God. (Nostra Aetate 3)
--------------------------
The word Allah is the Arabic equivalent to the English word God. The word Allah is used by Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews as well as Muslims. Although they have an incomplete understanding of the nature and revelation of God, Muslims worship the same God whom Christians and Jews worship.

---------------------

Pope Benedict XVI on Nostra Aetate and Islam

For more than forty years, the teaching of the Second Vatican Council has inspired and guided the approach taken by the Holy See and by local churches throughout the world to relations with the followers of other religions. Following the biblical tradition, the Council teaches that the entire human race shares a common origin and a common destiny: God, our Creator and the goal of our earthly pilgrimage. Christians and Muslims belong to the family of those who believe in the one God and who, according to their respective traditions, trace their ancestry to Abraham. (cf. Second Vatican Council, Nostra Aetate 1, 3)

I've never read the entire Koran- but I believe the Vatican Council may have summed it up quite well...

Just like the Bible has parts that are conflicting or interpreted in differing ways by different theologians- and sects of Christianity-- I have no doubt the Koran probably has verses that are conflicting and interpreted in differing ways by different sects of the Islamic religion....

Keep in mind that Vatican II ended in 1965. Much has changed since then in the Muslim World and a lot of what you're seeing now is not totally unlike some of the things that happened in the Protestant Reformation. Shiite vs Sunni....radical vs moderate.

Yep-- many church/religious historians and theologians compare where the Muslim religion is and whats happening in it today as to where the Christian religion was 500-600 years ago...

Except that Islam wants to (and does in Muslim ruled countries) control all Government, Laws, Punishments, Expansion, Sexual Habits, Economies, and Morality of all citizens with an iron fist, no Constitution, all with a "King" type ruler using the Koran as the basic principle.

Yea, I'd say they're AT LEAST 600 years behind Western Civilization for sure.

All along I thought OT was for Progression, not Regression?
