Department of Animal and Food Sciences
University of Kentucky, Lexington

Position: Assistant Equine Extension Professor, or Associate Equine Extension Professor, 12-month tenure-track position.
Description: The Department of Animal and Food Sciences at the University of Kentucky seeks an individual for an Extension and teaching position in the equine program. The person in this position will share equine Extension activities with other faculty and staff in the department.
The successful candidate will devote approximately 80% of their effort to Extension programming. The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide leadership to the 4-H Youth Horse program. Duties will include the development of educational materials for County Extension Agents for 4-H Youth Development, volunteer leaders, parents and 4-H youth. In addition, the person in this position will work with other equine Extension personnel to assess needs, develop, deliver and evaluate programs and activities related to 4-H youth development. The person in this position will be expected to seek extramural funding to support the youth related equine Extension activities.
The successful candidate will also be expected to work closely with other Extension faculty and staff to support ongoing adult extension education programs.
The College of Agriculture is developing a multi-disciplinary undergraduate major in equine science and management that will impact the teaching and advising activities associated with this position. The successful candidate will be expected to devote approximately 20% of their effort to instruction and advising at the undergraduate level.
The person in this position will work with faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, and staff at the University of Kentucky, and develop strong ties with the state equine industry.
Qualifications: A Ph. D. in Animal Science or related area with demonstrated experience and involvement in some aspect of the equine industry. In addition, the candidate must possess strong communications skills and a willingness to work cooperatively with others both in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences and the College of Agriculture.

Teaching and Research, 12-month tenure-track position.

Specialization: Equine Science

Description: The Department of Animal and Food Sciences at the University of Kentucky seeks an individual to contribute to teaching and research programs in equine science. The person holding this position will share teaching and advising responsibilities in the equine area with other faculty. The College of Agriculture is developing a multidisciplinary undergraduate major in equine science and management that will impact the teaching and advising activities associated with this position. The successful candidate will be expected to devote approximately 70% of their effort to instruction and advising and 30% of their time to developing and maintaining an extramurally funded research program in an area of equine science. The person in this position will be expected to participate in other activities of the Department of Animal and Food Sciences related to committee service, extension and student recruitment.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Animal Science or a related area. Candidates must be well-versed in equine management. Preference will be given to candidates with clear potential for, or demonstrated accomplishments in, excellence in teaching, advising, research and grantsmanship. Upon offer of employment, successful applicants for certain positions must undergo a national background check as required by University of Kentucky Human Resources.

Resources: The University of Kentucky is a public, research-extensive, land grant university. The Department of Animal and Food Sciences is comprised of approximately 35 faculty and 50 staff members involved in teaching, research and extension. The Department currently advises approximately 280 undergraduate students, and the College of Agriculture is developing a multidisciplinary major in equine science and management at the B.S. level that is expected to impact undergraduate enrollment. The 100-acre Horse Unit in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences maintains a herd of about 75 animals for research and teaching activities. The University of Kentucky is located in the heart of the Bluegrass Region within easy access to hundreds of commercial horse farms, two racetracks, several training facilities and the Kentucky Horse Park. The University supports instructional activities through the Teaching and Academic Support Center which focuses on developing and applying sound pedagogical concepts and appropriate instructional technology to promote student-centered, active learning. Research programs in the Department have a strong focus on nutrition. Other research areas include microbiology, food science and livestock reproduction. The Department offers graduate degrees at the M.S. and Ph.D. level. Well-equipped laboratory facilities are available within the Department for the analysis of feeds, animal tissues, cell and molecular samples. The Department enjoys excellent collaborative relationships with other units within and outside of the College of Agriculture.
