Pregnant man tells Oprah: It's a miracle
By Michael Conlon
Thu Apr 3, 9:43 AM PDT

A transgender man who is six months pregnant said in an interview aired by Oprah Winfrey on Thursday that he always wanted to have a child and considers it a miracle.

"It's not a male or female desire to have a child. It's a human desire," a thinly bearded Thomas Beatie said. "I have a very stable male identity," he added, saying that pregnancy neither defines him nor makes him feel feminine.

Beatie, 34, who lives in Oregon, was born a woman but decided to become a man 10 years ago. He began taking testosterone treatments and had breast surgery to remove glands and flatten his chest.

"I opted not to do anything with my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day," he told the talk show host. Beatie's wife Nancy said she inseminated him with a syringe using sperm purchased from a bank.

Now, he said, his size 32 jeans are getting a bit tight and his shirts are a bit stretched.

Nancy, to whom he has been married for five years and who has two grown daughters by a previous marriage, also appeared on the show, saying the couple's roles will not change once the baby is born.

"He's going to be the father and I'm going to be the mother," she said. Their marriage is legal and he is recognized under state law as a man.

The couple was shown on video provided by People Magazine, which collaborated with Winfrey on the show, showing the room that will be the baby's nursery. Beatie said the little girl was going to be "daddy's little princess."

The couple was also filmed in their hometown of Bend, Oregon, where he underwent an ultrasound showing the baby in his womb.

"I can't believe it. I can't believe she's inside me," Beatie said while watching the ultrasound image. "We see her as our little miracle."

His obstetrician, Dr. Kimberly James, who practices in the Oregon town, told Winfrey, "This is a normal pregnancy."

She said Beatie stopped taking testosterone two years ago and his levels of the hormone are normal.

"This baby is totally healthy," she said. "This is what I consider a normal pregnancy."

The couple said they had been turned down by a number of other doctors before James agreed to take him as a patient.

The couple said an earlier attempt at pregnancy failed when he developed a tubal pregnancy, resulting in surgery that removed his Fallopian tubes.

The couple said they decided to go public with the pregnancy because they wanted to control the way the news got out. "We're just going to have the baby now," Nancy said. "If we have to, we'll go hide."

The couple runs a small business in Bend and has some savings, she said. In addition, Beatie is working on a book about his childhood, his mother's suicide and his life growing in Hawaii where, as a girl, he was a teen beauty pageant contestant and earned a martial arts black belt.

Winfrey called the development "a new definition of what diversity means for everybody."

It looks to me a new definition on this society losing it.

How, in any biological sense, can you consider this person to be a man? this is a transgendered individual who, although has had the breast reduction, did NOT have any reproductive organs removed and quit taking testosterone shots two years ago. So she lives as a man, it does not make her a man....... what it does is makes her a lesbian with an artificially inseminated pregnancy (unless, of course, she actually got laid by a real man with real sperm).

I don't see how this makes her "special" or different from thousands of other transgendered women who prefer to live as a man, but still have the desire to bear children.

If they have the desire to bear children.......are they really "preferring" to live as a man?

If calling yourself something MAKES you that something, I think I will call myself a millionaire.....hell, why be a piker.....I'll call myself a billionaire. Now lets see if I can pay cash for a Ferrari...........but no, I didn't put a lot of thought into it. It seems some things are simply apparent on the surface.........of course, if Oprah has a show on this, it will make the tabloids. But then she has 5 hours a week of scintillating conversation to generate.

Actually MIke that is a good question I'm impressed.

I don't quite understand myself why anyone would want to look like a man and be pregnant. Can you imagine the stares on the street. Maybe more men are packing more the beer bellies. :?

I received an e-mail today with this article and pictures of Thomas.....

No doubt some of you have alrady seen this story, as it's been all over the papers and news...

Thomas Beatie is a transgender male and he's 22 weeks pregnant. Thomas still has a vagina, but he's legally male. He shares his life with his legal wife, Nancy. Thomas gave a first person account to the Advocate on how he came to be pregnant with a baby girl.

Thomas writes, "Ten years ago, when Nancy and I became a couple, the idea of us having a child was more dream than plan. I always wanted to have children. However, due to severe endometriosis 20 years ago, Nancy had to undergo a hysterectomy and is unable to carry a child. But after the success of our custom screen-printing business and a move from Hawaii to the Pacific Northwest two years ago, the timing finally seemed right. I stopped taking my bimonthly testosterone injections. It had been roughly eight years since I had my last menstrual cycle, so this wasn't a decision that I took lightly. My body regulated itself after about four months, and I didn't have to take any exogenous estrogen, progesterone, or fertility drugs to aid my pregnancy."

One year and many doctors later, Thomas got pregnant with triplets, but the pregnancy was ectopic. He eventually lost his embryos and his right fallopian tube. His second pregnancy has been a success and he's due on July 3, 2008.

He said that not many people in their community know about his pregnancy. He said they have "begun experiencing opposition from people who are upset by our situation. Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognize Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy's family doesn't even know I'm transgender."

I agree, the story is that a flat chested, bearded lesbian decided to have a baby. End of story!
