President Bush signed legislation into law reauthorizing the Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act of 1999. The law, which requires meat packers to report the prices they pay producers for animals, includes three changes to the pork reporting provisions:
Add more sows to the price reports to more accurately reflect sales and prices paid in that market.
Change the timing for data reporting to increase USDA accuracy and efficiency.
Allow USDA to publish price distributions for net prices to provide more useful information than is now provided.
The new law is effective through Sept. 30, 2011.
