PreK‐6 Menu of Classroom Activities: President Obama’s Address to Students
Across America
Produced by Teaching Ambassador Fellows, U.S. Department of Education
September 8, 2009
Before the Speech:

• Teachers can build background knowledge about the President of the United States and his
speech by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama and motivate students by asking
the following questions:

Who is the President of the United States?
What do you think it takes to be President?
To whom do you think the President is going to be speaking?
Why do you think he wants to speak to you?
What do you think he will say to you?

• Teachers can ask students to imagine being the President delivering a speech to all of the
students in the United States. What would you tell students? What can students do to help in
our schools? Teachers can chart ideas about what they would say.
• Why is it important that we listen to the President and other elected officials, like the mayor,
senators, members of congress, or the governor? Why is what they say important?

During the Speech:

• As the President speaks, teachers can ask students to write down key ideas or phrases that are
important or personally meaningful. Students could use a note‐taking graphic organizer such as
a Cluster Web, or students could record their thoughts on sticky notes. Younger children can
draw pictures and write as appropriate. As students listen to the speech, they could think about
the following:
What is the President trying to tell me?
What is the President asking me to do?
What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about?

• Students can record important parts of the speech where the President is asking them to do
something. Students might think about: What specific job is he asking me to do? Is he asking
anything of anyone else? Teachers? Principals? Parents? The American people?
• Students can record any questions they have while he is speaking and then discuss them after
the speech. Younger children may need to dictate their questions.
After the Speech:
• Teachers could ask students to share the ideas they recorded, exchange sticky notes or stick
notes on a butcher paper poster in the classroom to discuss main ideas from the speech, i.e.
citizenship, personal responsibility, civic duty.
• Students could discuss their responses to the following questions:
What do you think the President wants us to do?
Does the speech make you want to do anything?
Are we able to do what President Obama is asking of us?
What would you like to tell the President?
• Teachers could encourage students to participate in the Department of Education’s “I Am What I

Learn” video contest. On September 8th the Department will invite K‐12 students to submit a
2
video no longer than 2 min, explaining why education is important and how their education will
help them achieve their dreams. Teachers are welcome to incorporate the same or a similar
video project into an assignment. More details will be released via www.ed.gov.
Extension of the Speech: Teachers can extend learning by having students
• Create posters of their goals. Posters could be formatted in quadrants or puzzle pieces or trails
marked with the labels: personal, academic, community, country. Each area could be labeled with
three steps for achieving goals in those areas. It might make sense to focus on personal and
academic so community and country goals come more readily.

• Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected
and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their
goals.
• Write goals on colored index cards or precut designs to post around the classroom.
• Interview and share about their goals with one another to create a supportive community.
• Participate in School wide incentive programs or contests for students who achieve their goals.
• Write about their goals in a variety of genres, i.e. poems, songs, personal essays.
• Create artistic projects based on the themes of their goals.
• Graph student progress toward goals.

What a role model you are- teach them to stick their heads in the sand and pretend the real world doesn't exist  :( :(

My kids don't need to by buying anything that Maobama is selling. All political indoctrination, religious teaching, etc..... happens at my discretion. Both of them are honor roll students and don't need to be rah-rahed by that pos.

Speaking of sticking your head in the sand, what are you and your comrades gaining by ignoring that the man is a bleeping socialist?

Sounds like you need to get off the public teat then- take your kids out of school and use some of that moldy banker money to put them in private school...The people of the country voted for Obama to set the direction for the country- and with these same taxpayers paying to educate your kids- they get to choose how....
Or does Nebraska not take any Federal funding?

I think it makes more sense to get the Obama public off my teat.

Obama has set the direction of this country straight toward socialism, and that is NOT what most of even the idiots who voted for him voted for. 99% of you haven't even figured out that he is a socialist yet, despite a mountain of evidence. You want to talk about placing one's head in the sand, or even another place?

My kids won't be listening to a socialist Chicago thug.

Thankfully my son's school is closed next Tuesday. If Obama's speech, address, indoctrination whatever you want to call it would be non-polictial, I wouldn't have a problem with it, but my gutt tells me otherwise.

Which President has been nonpolitical :???:

You all run around peeing down your legs like the world is coming to an end- and that this is something new....I can remember back when TV's weren't even that common place- and they'd have assemblies to listen to President Kennedy-- and then go back to the classroom and discuss what he said...Even in High School I remember listening to LBJ- and discussing the Vietnam War that many were soon going off to....
We listened to several speechs- Senator Mansfield and others- about the proposed closing of our AFB- the political reasoning- and discussed the effects it would have- since about half our students were "base kids"...

But the world didn't come to an end because we heard those political speech's...I'd like to think it got more interested and involved in world happenings, politics, and the operation of our Government.. It gave us a broader view of the whole picture...

Sounds like you need to get off the public teat then- take your kids out of school

I did... do I get a refund on taxes paid?

if the fed and states would provide vouchers to assist poor parents in education choices, maybe public schools would try to improve..

as for public school policy/agenda indoctrination... it is wrong.. no matter who does it..

Could you imagine how the liberals would have threw a fit if Bush would have sent the script to teachers on how to discuss his speech with them?

Nothing wrong with him talking to the kids, but the way he wants to control the conversations before and afterwards as well as how they think during it.

Just some more Hitler like control!

Hello.

I’m President Barack Obama and I’m very grateful for this opportunity to speak to the people I feel are most important to the future of America, and to you students too. Many thanks to the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers for letting me into your “homes” so I can talk to your children.

I remember being a young , confused school boy, wishing that President Nixon or President Ford would give me some guidance as to what I should think or do during the school year. But they never did. Why? The answer, as any good teacher will tell you, is simple.

Republicans hate children.

It’s true. When scientists at the UN aren’t busy coming to consensus about Global Cooling/Warming/Whatever-Works-This-Week they’ve proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that people who vote Republican just don’t like you.

As you embark on another year of learning I urge you all to focus on the important things, like whether or not mommy and daddy are driving hybrid vehicles. Or putting those squiggly little light bulbs in all the lamps in your house. People who don’t do these things hate Earth.

Just like the Republicans do.

Let me talk for a moment about personal responsibility. As president, I have to take responsibility for many of the tough choices I make, especially ones that are made because George W. Bush screwed everything up. You may face similar choices this year in school. I want you to take ownership of your decisions even if they’re made more difficult by the fact that President Bush hated education. We can’t keep blaming the past.

But we can persevere and keep trying to.

The first time you have a big test the next day I want you to imagine this:

“What if I got the H1N1 virus tonight and infected my whole class? And what if we all died because none of us had adequate health care? All of my work studying for this test would have been wasted!”

I don’t want to scare you but there are many things that could turn all your study time into a big waste because you didn’t notice the bus that was about to hit you while you were disoriented from having the flu and you couldn’t get treated because Republicans won’t let me pass health care reform.

As most of you know, Sen. Ted Kennedy recently passed away. And as you heard his grandson say in front of God and everyone, health care reform was the defining issue of his life. The Catholic Church wouldn’t have allowed him to say that during mass if it wasn’t so important. Sen. Kennedy had a fondness for younger people, too. Early in his career, he worked at bridging the gap between himself and young, female campaign staffers. Let’s not let his legacy drown in negativity.

My staff and I don’t want you to struggle with knowing what’s right like we had to as students. That’s why we have supplied some lesson plans to your teachers to help all of you. When was the last time a Republican cared that much about you?

One of the first questions in the lesson plan involves why it’s important to listen to your elected officials. I know that many of you still listen to your parents and that’s perfectly all right. But you need to realize something. Your parents are working very hard, many of them at two jobs so they can pay for the brutal choices I’m making now because George W. Bush just plain sucked. It is difficult for them to know a lot of stuff because they work so hard. Politicians don’t have to work as hard so we have more time to know stuff. It really is that simple.

So ask your parents questions that they can answer easily when they are exhausted. Things like, “Where’s the can opener?” or “Why did President Bush make things so hard for President Obama?”

For the tougher questions in life, ask your teachers and listen to your elected officials. Remember though, some elected officials can’t be trusted so you should always check with your teachers first about which ones can.

I want all of you to begin each school year believing that your education could make you President of the United States one day. Like school, it’s got it’s rough spots but has a lot of great things about it. Like being able to order a hamburger and fries any time of day or night. Or looking at Michelle bend over in the garden in her special “First Lady shorts”. Sorry, that’s probably just the scotch talking now. I shoot about a hundred of these videos a week for various “grassroots” organizations and it gets a little tedious.

One of the last things your teachers are going to ask you to think about is what you can do to help me, President Barack Obama.

We have covered the most important things already, so let’s recap them.

Listen to me.

If I am not available, listen to the elected officials your teachers tell you are cool.

Don’t bother your poor parents with questions about the important things in life. They’re very tired.

And remember the two most important words any American can say whenever faced with tough times and criticism:

“Bush’s fault!”

Good luck this year. I’ll see you all in December for my “What To Think On Your Non-Denominational Break When Your Parents Might Tell You Something” speech.

And thank you teachers for, well, you know.

What was that you were saying A+?

What goes around -comes around-- but now its all different- eh :???:

George H.W. Bush: Encouraged "America's students to strive for excellence." While president, George H.W. Bush gave a speech to schoolchildren intended "to motivate America's students to strive for excellence; to increase students' as well as parents' responsibility/accountability; and to promote students' and parents' awareness of the educational challenge we face." According to The Washington Post, the "White House sent letters to schools across the nation to encourage teachers and principals to allow students to tune in the speech, which was also carried live by the Mutual Broadcasting and NBC Radio Network. The live television and radio coverage was arranged at the request of the Education Department." [Washington Post, 10/2/91]

George W. Bush: Learning materials from White House. As Media Matters for America deputy research director Simon Maloy noted, former President George W. Bush posted a "teacher's guide" on the White House website intended to help students understand the "freedom timeline" and encouraged them to "explor[e] the biographies of the President, Mrs. Bush, Vice President, and Mrs. Cheney."

you don't notice the difference do you OT and R2?

Bush posted it on the WH website and invited the Teachers to visit the site. Maybe even the Parents could be involved in the experience.

Obama is going directly into the classroom.

Will the kids be graded on the assignment?

How can a child help the President?

Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected
and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their
goals.

I have no problem with Obama nor Bush 1 giving these speeches or encouraging the teachers to let the kids watch them. It is the obsessive outline of direction he is giving the teachers on how to pre discuss it, what to do during it and how to react after it!

If in any way Bush one did the same thing, then he was wrong also! I am not a bias bitcher, I hate them all! And if the elder Bush did it then he was wrong! If he did as you posted in promoting the watching it then I have no problem with them doing that!

The discussion in the class room afterwards and during should be on of free will between the students and teacher.

As for older Bush I have no recollect of him giving such a speech, or being this controlling in any form of communication with students or teachers. But if he did then he also was wrong!

As I have said before I hate them all! If God forbid we ever have a terrorist attack again I only hope it happens in Washington vs anywhere else!

If the kids disagree with something the President says in his speech, will they be called a "racist"?

One parent told her Obama's speech does not allow for healthy debate. It simply “obligates the youngest children in our public school system to agree with Obama's initiatives or be ostracized by their teachers and classmates.”

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6599457.html

In 1989, President George H.W. Bush used a nationally televised speech to schoolchildren to push an anti-drug campaign. He urged young people to stop using drugs.
