Problems with public access to you property.

For many years now, the public has had access to any track or pathway throughout the countryside, farmland included, here is a typical result of this liberal policy;

This is related in a round'about way. Many many times over the years when I am out with a college or whatever on a dino dig we always take along ' paying passengers'. They go for the thrills of it and we charge them a fee and use it to help pay the cost of the dig.

Anyhoo....some of these people are WAY WAY more liberal than me and we have the hardest time making them understand they can not wander anywhere they choose, cross any fence they choose or look into any building they choose when working on a ranch.

It's like they have no sense of MY property and YOUR property. It amazes me.

Just this past summer I had to track down and fetch back a kid from NYC, Manhattan to be exact, as he'd crossed over into another section, of another rancher of which we did not have permission to be there.

We tell them DO NOT cross fences, stay in the fenceline, or on this side of ' that' fence and visually show them the fence.....then when they get lost you hear, " Oh....THAT fenceline???"

Oh....and gates....they no idea what they are used for it seems!!  So, one of us always makes sure we open and close the gates ourselves.

so, we can officially add "babysitter" to your resume ??

I hate people like that. I have an uncle, who found out that I rented more ground for this spring, and one day I saw him out driving all over it.... I told my dad that his brother better learn a little bit of respect for property rights or I would be calling the cops on family.
and I would too..... I despise people who ignore PRIVATE property.

"Sign, sign, everywhere a sign...
...do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?!"

Do y'all remember the song; I always HATED that song and the no-respect-for-private-property philosopy that it espoused. :x

(Sign is a funny-looking word that doesn't look right on paper when you write it, I had to look at it in the deictionary to make sure I'd spelled it right.)

You don't like the idea in this song? Hmmm, I wonder why not?

"So I jumped on the fence and yelled at the house, Hey, what gives you the right?"????

Maybe because I pay my mortgage and taxes??!!!

TOO bad the walkers weren, the ones in the PIT maybe they'd get the idea to stay on designated trails and close gates ,yearly i find gates left open ,or fences cut.makes one dream of the olden days with tall trees and long ropes    but the reality is as landowners we are at the mercy of these people too do the right thing and respect our fences and gates by leaving them as found

One word for ya: LOCKS! We tryed for years to be nice and allow access up canyons where we own or lease sections in the mouth of the canyon. But after having cattle shot by hunters(Bad word, should of said idiots with guns!), gathering for a week only to have all the cows back on top after gates down and folks picnicing on the lawn at the ranch that was enough! If the road has been there a while and legally there is access then your kinda handcuffed. But the way people act anymore its not worth the heartache to deal with em'. Sad but true! But if people actually come and ASK for permission, we mostly let them as they are really good about not doing the above mentioned stuff and go out of their way to take care of things! Like everything else, just a few boneheads ruin the whole shebang!

the majority of the people are realy good but some of them have no respect 99 out of 100 get soiled by the 1 the .on the forest srevice roads i find the best solution is to put a easy close leverage system.the further out and rougher the access road seems to eliminate problems as well some of my range fences get checked twice a year, unless a problem develops in that area so trust is really important.
