Question? Digital TV

Why is the Govt offering a rebate to people to buy a box to add to your existing TV so you can get digital.

Why would or should the govt care wether we have a good clear picture?

Is there a hidden ajenda?

I have my opinion, but would like to hear that of others.

Actually I am aware of that situation-- Government for the past 20 years hasn't kept up with or managed advances in technology...By not doing this with the developing new radio bands- everyone jumped in and grabbed at a frequency and it was a muddled mess-- that caused some major overlapping channels problems when they decided to make one entire band for emergency services only...

An agreement was reached (how I don't know) and it was decided that analog be kept available only for law enforcement, military, and emergency services-- while digital would be available to corporate market (tv's, cellphones, etc.)....
So now many of the tvs need to have the box in order to convert to digital...Why the government is picking up part of the cost is unknown...

Same thing has or will occur with you if you have a cell phone...The analog frequencies are gone- and now you need to get a digital...And the new digitals have the capability of telling where you are at any time with GPS positioning that is going into all the systems...Good if your laying out there injured and emergency personnel are trying to reach you-- bad if you want to preserve your privacy.... :?

They are going to cut out the current signal your tv operates on completely. You will have to have a digital tv or you will not get a signal with your old one when they switch unless you have a box.

The new system will free up some frequencies that can then be sold to have more bandwidth available for new technology. They expect that frequency auction to bring in billions of dollars. This could offset the cost of people having to have a new box to get tv reception if they don't want to get an hd tv set and use their old one with a box.

I think the rebate for the converter box is now around $45 but I haven't found where to get a converter box. I think you can get 2 rebates per house currently good for two boxes.

I hope this answered your question.
