Steve, if you had something happen to you while in the service, leave it in the service. It is kind of like they say about Las Vegas. What goes on in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas.
Servicemen have to deal with a lot because of war; they see things no one should ever have to see, and not ever be given the proper thanks for it, and sometimes never recover from those experiences. Too many men went through that in 'Nam and it destroyed many of their lives. We should all have a little more understanding for these unspoken events, just like giving the lady in the story respect.
I know I might be out of line in this discussion but there never really is a good way to talk about it.
