Question on Cuba

Should we normilize relations with Cuba. I think we should. I think it would go a long way in relations with other South American Countries. After all they are in our back yard and not half way around the world. What is any one else's opinion on this.

I agree. It's long overdue.

The Castro brothers are dictators, but if I had to choose a dictatorship to live in, it would be Cuba.

I agree with you- trade embargos by one country have never worked- just as was shown by Carters wheat embargo on Russia...The only ones hurt were the US wheat farmers :(

The state of Montana and Montana Agriculture groups have worked for years with Cuba- trying to build up a trade repore... And our Congressional delegation has supported getting the embargo lifted-- until this year- when Congressman Denny Rehberg changed his vote at the last minute and voted to support the embargo :???: After which he has received over $10,000 worth of campaign contributions from a Florida based anti Cuban trade lobbiest group - to which I have written him numerous letters and e-mails asking him why the vote change :???: - which he has refused to answer... So this year I refused to vote for him since he thought Montana voters were not important enough to answer- but knew he had no one running against him-- so told us to go take a Flying F---.....

But I have a long memory...

Yes, we should normalize relations with Cuba.

No we should not.

Cuba has reneged on most of it's obligations to other countries' for purchases of food, goods, etc. They are depending mostly on Venezuala at present.

By normalizing trade, it would only be a matter of time before they stick the shaft to us also.

If they have no money, why should we take a risk?

Apparently they have oil offshore. Someone is going to help them develop those resources. Why shouldn't it be the United States instead of China or Iran?

Because we don't need another non-paying customer.

China grants Cuba delay in debt payment

HAVANA, Cuba – Emanating from a two-day visit by the President of the People’s Republic of China Hu Jintao to Cuba on November 17, many trade and economic benefits were granted to strengthen the ties between China and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean country.

According to Caribbean Net News, President Hu agreed to delay some of Cuba's debt payments, and donated $80 million for hospital modernization and restoration of hurricane-stricken public areas.

The report states that the two countries signed accords on November 18 to “put off 10 years payments for an unspecified trade debt Cuba ran up through 1995, and for five years a $7.2 million credit China granted in 1998”.

So? We could take oil in exchange. Or lease their oil drillin rights and then they'd have cash to pay their debts.

So this is your trade policy?

Not trading with any debtor nation?

Alabama sends chicken products to Cuba now. C.O.D. of course.

No sense in getting stuck by someone that you KNOW ain't gonna pay, is there?

Well, if we're gonna go around the world starting wars....why didn't they take over Cuba? Closer, warmer, Spanish is easier than ANY Arabic language.

It would make money as a tourist destination, it's got some oil off it's western shores.

Go in build a WalMart and McDonalds and rock and roll.

Fieldale ( Springer Mtn) here ships chickens to Cuba and last I heard they were a great customer.

Simple Kola- the Bush/Cheny oil boys, Military Industrial Complex, and the Halliburtons of the country didn't think they could profiteer as much (at the expense of the US taxpayer) by invading Cuba....

while I doubt Cuba would allow an American company to drill for oil in it's waters.. the embargo has not worked.. we trade with China, Russia, Vietnam. and many other communist countries..

it is arguable if trade has brought the countries closer to reforms and democracy, but clearly the two examples.. North Korea and Cuba of an embargo shows that not trading doesn't help either..

I would do it in two parts.. allow unlimited US exports to Cuba for the first year.. and if they agree to better human rights we would allow limited imports from them..

as for travel.. the same would be in effect. ..Cubans and Americans (such as badwhatever) could visit or move to Cuba.. and if after a year the the Cuban Government improves conditions.. Cubans could visit here for a short duration...

In the last few days Raul Castro has offered to meet and try to get the America and Cuba back on more favorable terms. I think if relations were normalized with Cuba then this would go a long way to isolating Chaves and his influence. Also Russia China and Brazil are planning offshore drilling in the waters off of Cuba's coast. With China we are sending money to them for all of our gadgets and gizmos and they are taking the money to Cuba to explore for oil. I think that Cuba would just as soon have Exxon off of their coast. Also look at the old cars Cubans are driving maybe they might want some new cars. Does anyone remember from their History lessons in school we learned of the Monroe Docterine maybe this should be looked at again.
