What's wrong with a single national data base? We are heading that way for multi species. Ours works so good others want to be included.

But you already live in a socialized nation where government sleeps with you daily and you're used to it    ........

We're trying to keep at least the appearance of still having independence..Remember our country was built around the idea of states rights and the state being the center of government.....
Socialism and protectionism can be quite common bedfellows. I get a real kick out of protectionists who try to make out that they are free enterprisers.

Our second amendment is based on the idea of protectionism.

Bill, when we make trade agreements with countries that do not have the protective laws against things like market power or the environment we have protectionism. It is protecting the the imports from the costs that we have put on domestic production.

That makes absolutely no sense at all.

What has changed with regards to Canada's "protective laws against things like market power or the environment " since Cafta was signed? The simmple truth is that certain US groups have decided it was not in their own best personal interest hence the smear campaign instittued by R-Calf against Canadian cattle and beef.

I read last night that a group of producers who visited Brazil recently came back and announced that the cost of producing lean meat for grinds down there is 30% to 50% of the cost in North America.

Where is "Protectionism" when you really need it?

Nothing has changed. It was a bad trade deal. The producers in both countries got ripped so that the merchants could get cheaper products and manipulate the markets with that supply. With Canada the cheaper supply happened during the BSE fiasco and the manipulation is with captive supply, not just Canada supply.

Why do you think that the U.S.'s deficit spending has not adversely affected U.S. interest rates to a greater extent? I will give you a hint, it is not because we are saving in the U.S.. Fareed Zakaria (sp?) hit that one on the head on his sunday morning talk show some months ago. It has not been talked about much after.

Just something to bear in mind....... when you think about it,North American lean grinding beef could almost be considered a by-product of the production of high quality, grain-fed beef produced in North America. The lean grind and fatty trim is what is left over after the high-value cuts are taken out and sold for more money than South American beef would ever bring.
I just don't see South American beef as much of a competitor with high quality grain-fed beef. Just my opinion.

In this country we must pay our own health care costs. They are part of our production costs. For a level playing field shouldn't that be rectified with a tarriff? The CAFT countries, as well as Canada are permitted to used drugs we are not, that adds to our costs, not to mention the difference in beef on which certain drugs are used. In many countries there is no such thing as an antitrust law. How can we deal with that? Minimum wage in Guatemala doesn't exist. Many earn $2 a day. Not a level field.

Quote: "R-CALF is not opposed to any national program."

Then why did the membership recently vote against "M"ID by a landslide vote?

Sandbag had to eat his words AGAIN because he was trying to claim that R-CALF's position was not "don't burden me with traceback" but rather "we don't want a burdensome traceback". Nice play on words huh? Well Sandbag couldn't deny the vote.

I guess R-CALF members were just paying "lip service" again when they said, "don't consumers have a right to know where their beef comes from".

What they really meant was "don't a handful of isolationist producers like us have a right to know which 5% of our U.S. beef consumption at the retail level is imported so we don't buy that sliver of foreign beef by mistake".

Guess what? In Canada we must pay our own health care costs as well through taxation. Taxes are part of my production costs. I have no arguement with any one concerned with competing with low or non-existant wages and input costs with 3rd world countries. Canada ain't one of them.

Be careful, Bill, it might come true.

You know what, SH? Maybe I did speak out of turn on M-ID. I presented what the policy was prior to the convention. I should of let OCM answer the question, but I thought I knew the answer. My information was outdated, and I recognize and admit that. You know what I'm going to do? I'm going to change my position per reality. You should try that.

You've already shown that your definition of isolationist is not the same as Websters. Why not speak the same language as everybody else? Is it harder to be right then?

Sandhusker I am glad to see that we all modify our thinking over time 8) As far as anyone using stict ''webster'' definitions I think that is asking a little much from anyone!

Just keeping you on your toes. Truth prevails. That's why it is so hard to back up all the R-CALF 'positions"
