Rabbits!!

Buckerette, I sure do feel for you. We have waskily wabbits, too, but have enough coyotes to eat 'em. Our problem are TURKEYS. They are EVERYWHERE. They get into the cake feeder and crap all over the place, there is more turkey s*** than you can shake a stick at. BTW, this is the damage turkeys can do:

seems like your dogs need a few stray cats to teach them how to control the population....

the stray cats will after being fed a few rabbits go after the young in the nest.....ending the large population....just get the cats fixed first..........or you will have a cat problem.......

rabbit is good grilled.......and fried......but the stray cats will take to them....

Hanta Yo are Canadians allowed to come down and thin your turkeys out in the spring lol.

We can probably work something out. If they aren't thinned out, some disease will go through them and kill them. That happened about 10 yrs ago. When we moved here we had a small bunch of about 30. Then they disappeared until about 3 yrs ago. They've been increasing in numbers since. I guess the drought has been good to them (nice, open winters) so now we have 'way too many - about 125-150, our neighbor has even more. It seems the WHOLE BUNCH of them like my yard and scratch in it and make bare spots, and s*** all over the place!!! I worry about coccidiosis, with them s******* all over the feed bunks, in the cake feeder, etc etc. We've had the problem before when turkeys were hanging around...

Holy Cow, glad I don't have turkeys!!!

Didn't know stray cats would eat the little wabbits. They'd help out with the kangaroo rats too, got a few too many of them as well.

Buckerette,

Here's a good rabbit recipe:

Rabbit Stroganoff

2 rabbits, cut up
1/2 C flour
1/4 t salt
1/4 t pepper
1/2 C dry sherry
1 t paprika
1/2 C melted butter
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1/2 C chopped green pepper
1 C chopped fresh mushrooms (may use 1 small can)
Dredge rabbit pieces in a combination of flour, salt, pepper & paprika. Pour the melted butter in a casserole baking dish and place rabbit in dish. Bake uncovered about 50 minutes at 350 degrees. Meanwhile, combine the canned soup, fresh mushrooms and green pepper in a bowl. Add sherry and pour this sauce over the rabbit mixture. Place back in the oven for 30 minutes at same temperature. Bake uncovered. Serve immediately over hot rice.

I think it would be yummy to serve with mashed potatoes!!!

Whens the season down there-my neighbor was just over talking about going on a hunt for them lol.

Spring season is April 8-May 21. Get on this website www.fwp.mt.gov and it has everything you need...can even apply for a license online. To get a turkey tag, have to purchase a conservation tag, then an upland game bird tag, then a turkey tag. It gets pretty costy, but just get on the website and you will learn more.

OR Northern Rancher you can go to Texas. It must be open season on Wild Turkeys down there.

the key is to feed them well (on fresh dead rabbit and rats..) and provide a good shelter for them......then cut back on the food while providing plenty of water......also don't take in a "pet cat" as it will just whine at your door for more food....

Make sure you get them fixed or you will soon have a cat problem...as with plenty of food they will overpopulate as well.

Buckerette,
This has made me remember back in the 70'S when I lived in Idaho and the jackrabbits exploded down near Territon. They put up a bunch and I mean a bunch of plastic snowfence and had a good old bunny bash, with herders pushing the wabbits into the traps weilding their clubs. They took out thousands, sold a bunch of t-shirts and had alot of fun. That was when the real term bunny hugger was invented
