Racial Politics Blows up in Obamas face

Whenever race is mentioned, it hurts Barack Obama's presidency. The very basis of his presidency is that he is the post racial president. Now he finds himself knee-deep into racial politics.

Some is of his own doing. In suing Arizona over immigration reform, he takes a step that alienates the three-quarters of Anglo voters who back the law. In refusing to prosecute the Black Panthers for their blatant intimidation of white voters in 2008, he alienates fair thinking people of both races. But in firing Shirley Sherrod, he showed African-Americans that he was caving in to pressure from FOX News and the conservatives. Then, by reversing field and reinstating her, the president and his Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack show whites and Republicans-Independent voters that he is caving in to pressure from the African-American community.

There are two common denominators to this equation: race and weakness. Any involvement in racial politics has to hurt Obama at his core. It goes to his fundamental selling point: That he is post racial. By dealing with race repeatedly, he is vulnerable just as Bill Clinton was when he had always to deal with sexual scandal. It is not his strength but can ultimately destroy his credibility.

And then there is weakness. By caving in first to the right and then to the left, Obama acts and looks indecisive and weak. He comes across as out of control and projects the same image of incapacity and chaos that he so amply demonstrated when the oil was gushing in the Gulf. He reminds one of the opening days of the Clinton Administration when it tied itself in knots over the issue of gays in the military. It looks like amateur hour at the White House.

Obama has two conflicting goals: He wants to expand his base among whites and heighten enthusiasm of blacks. Good goals, both. But if he uses racial issues to accomplish either objective -- as he appears to do in the Sherrod controversy -- he alienates one group in order to win the other. Not a good strategy.

Dick Morris (born November 28, 1948) is an American political author and commentator who previously worked as a pollster, political campaign consultant, and general political consultant, and a popular guest on TV show "Hannity".

A longtime friend and advisor to Bill Clinton during his time as Governor of Arkansas, Morris became a political adviser to the White House after Clinton was elected president in 1992. Morris encouraged Clinton to pursue third way policies of triangulation that combined traditional Republican and Democratic proposals, rhetoric, and issues to achieve maximum political gain and popularity. He worked as a Republican strategist before joining the Clinton administration, where he helped Clinton recover from the 1994 midterm elections by convincing the President to adopt Republican policies.[1]

The president consulted Morris in secret beginning in 1994.[2] Clinton's communications director George Stephanopoulos has said that "Over the course of the first nine months of 1995, no single person had more power over the president".[3] Morris went on to become campaign manager of Bill Clinton's successful 1996 bid for re-election to the office of President. His tenure on that campaign was cut short two months before the election, when it was revealed that he had allowed a prostitute to listen in on conversations with the President. Morris then turned his focus to media commentary. He now writes a weekly column for the New York Post which is carried nationwide, contributes columns and blogs to both the print and online versions of The Hill, and appears regularly on the Fox News Channel for political commentary. He is also President of Vote.com, a website which conducts polls on "important public issues and other topics" and then emails results to "important decision makers" in government.[4]

More recently, Morris has emerged as a harsh critic of the Clintons and has written several books that criticize them, including Rewriting History, a rebuttal to Senator Hillary Clinton's Living History. Morris said that he would leave the United States if Hillary Clinton were elected president in 2008.[5]

Currently, Morris is the strategist for Republican Christy Mihos's campaign in the 2010 Massachusetts gubernatorial race.[6]

So, you like Bill Clinton's people then??

Amazing................

lets see.. "Morris encouraged Clinton to pursue ,... policies ,... combined traditional Republican" ,... policies..

yes any one who moves a democrat away from democrat policies to those that include Republican policies has some redeeming characteristics..

and... "He worked as a Republican strategist" seems he at least understands conservatism... (enough to explain/sell it to Bill Clinton)

and least not... "he helped Clinton recover from the 1994 midterm elections by convincing the President to adopt Republican policies."

like I said... anyone who moves a liberal to the right.. even an inch... deserves some credit.. especially when they do it at the national level..

and he got a prostitute to listen to Bill.. at least someone was listening to Bill..

Amazing indeed isn't it, that some folks here judge others by their actions/deeds as opposed to the (D) or (R) behind their names.

Morris can suck toes all he wants, as Steve correctly pointed out, he saved Bill Clinton from Bill Clinton. No easy task.
