Trillium. Not sure which exact one, their are a bunch. It is in the lilly family.

Those thistle sure are pretty.....to be such an unsightly mess in a pasture.

Can't say I've seen the one in the last photo.

I posted these on CattleToday a while back. Hope you don't mind me jumping on board with some Spring pictures. Sure is looking better this year than last.

It appears cattle like wildflowers..........I don't remember this hill looking like this since I was a kid. Dad kept the spray regimine better than I do. Besides a really wet fall and winter, the only thing different is cattle. I havn't had any on it since late August.

Lilly, that round purple flower looks like our thistle. Its the tuffest weed I ever delt with cold weather don't bother it. It don't grow much in the winter but it gets tuff. Spray won't hardly bother it. But in the spring it sends up a stalk with that flower. U can run over it and it be flat on the ground but if is got a little root it will still flower. U can spray them in the spring and kill them in about a week but they will still try and most of the time will still flower.

Don't mind at all. Love bluebonnets, they are a legume as well as a lupine. I don't know if all legumes are lupines or visa versa...don't know that much about plants. But I do know that bluebonnets are referred to as both. Main thing is they are perdy. Roadsides are covered with them right now...along with the Indian paintbrushes.

Lets's see.

From Wiki - Lupins or lupines (North America) are the members of the genus Lupinus in the legume family (Fabaceae). Again, their are a lot of lupine that aren't the "Texas Bluebonnet". Some of them aren't even blue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupin

Big Muddy, If you look real close in the first close-up of the Bluebonnets, you can find some little purple vetch blossoms (more like a spot) and some folage. Not sure if it is the variety or fertility, but in the pastures it rarely gets taller than 6-10 inches.

While we are identifying flowers, the little 5 petal lavender flowers are a phlox and I think the little white daisy type flowers are a type of asters.

Jersey Lilly, I was going to say your thistle are farther along than ours. Ours are bolting, but not in bloom just yet. :)

Love all the flowers! It will be several weeks yet till we have much for wild flowers in west central SD.

I wonder if that blue, three petal flower is a tradescanti. Not sure of the common name for it, but the leaves, bud, etc. sure do look like the ones shown in some garden catalogs as well as on the prairie around here....in mid-June if I remember correctly. They can also be a deeper blue, or even pink-ish around here.

Thanks for sharing the great photo's.
