Not surprising that whitewing could still have internet and cell phone and power, the epicenter was near Caracas, the capitol, Argintina being nearly twice the size of California, would not mean that services all over the country would be disrupted by a 6.0 earthquake.
In 1989 when San Francisco had the 7.1 quake, towns within 50 miles barely felt the tremor and lost no services!!!!!!

I'm curious as to how well the cattle would "clean up" the native forage, vines etc. And how they perform on it. What kind of trees are there. I don't see pine LOL

There are areas of the country planted with huge pine plantations. I understand that there are zones near the Orinoco River where hundreds of thousands of hectars were planted 30 to 40 years ago and are being harvested today mostly for the construction of furniture.

My Charolais don't do as well on some of the native forage as the mestizos do, that's for sure. Many of the locals, once the rains start falling in the mountains, turn their mestizios loose for about 6 months to make it on their own, and they seem to do quite well eating just about whatever they can find.

Trees? All types, though I've not learned how to ID most of them. The perdominant trees you'll see in the photos of my pastures are what they call arboles de aceite or literally translated, oil trees. I think they're beautiful with their yellow bark and the branching and canopy reminds me of southern live oak in some ways.

For fence posts, apparently the roble and palo sano are the best, the latter lasting for decades.

Did your ground shake there today WW?

Good thing you felt nothing and were able to continue using the Internet what with a major earthquake, panic, and power outages. It would have been nice to tell us about it when it happened. Straight from the horse's mouth as it were.

 You just can't believe I actually live here, can you reader?

  I've always loved the American knowledge of geography! I thought Whitewing and Caracas were in Venezuela rather than Argentina? Venezuela would indeed be more than twice the size of California whereas Argentina would be closer to 7x the size.

Reminds me of the time the Argentinians invaded the Falkland Islands and the British foreign secretary contacted the US foreign affairs secretary to discuss the situation. The US foreign secretary had to go find a map to look where the Falklands were

Back in the 1960's, our grade school class eagerly applied for international pen pals through the Weekly Reader magazine. I was hoping for a ranch kid type from Australia. Instead, I got a city boy from Austria. His name was Franz Zelsacher, and we really didn't have too much in common. :? :(
