What is with the bin in the background with no skin on it. Have to admit I like the Cab-over, we had one like it once.

It appears to be a corn crib; a bin to store ear corn that also allows it to dry.
I rode too many miles in a cab over to ever like them.

The bins without the skins....(say that three times in a row) are earcorn cribs..... AND WOULD SELL THEM CHEAP!! The tops would be a great gazeebo and the wire is good for fence.....

Thanks Clarence. What I know about corn is more on the consumption side so a couple of production questions. Why store it like that rather than combine it? How do you get it out of there? Is that fairly common.

I'm not Clarence per, but my hubby and I picked as much as 500 acres of ear corn when we were first married. We picked it with a four row unisystem and 4 gravity boxes... You put your elevator to the top of the crib and elevate the corn into the crib. Pushing corn out of the gravity box can be challenging at times. Also getting a corn cob caught in the chains of your elevator can cause havic to your routine... When we were done usually by Christmas I had muscles places women didn't have muscles.
Now to get the corn out, you place the grinder mixer at the opening of the crib and scoop it our with a shovel.. The kids would climb the pile of corn and slide down on their bottoms to bring the corn down so we could scoop it..
You can keep corn in the cribs for over a year and it will just like when you put it in the crib.. No spoilage except on the outside where the shucks will turn black.. Keeps critters like deer and racoons out of your corn...

I just thought some of you would like to see what corn in the crib looked like. That picture was copied from a slide. I may have taken it about 40 years ago. Corn keeps better in the ear as air can get to it better. Shelled corn needs to be put in storage with less then 15% moisture or it will heat when the weather warms in the spring. Not much corn was harvested with a combine back when I took this picture. Now they have drying bins and there are hybrids that dry down better in the fall.

When we raised corn, we had a sheller, some times we shelled it after it dried some, but we fed a lot of ground ear corn, as well as ground shelled corn.

We ground it with a Letz grinder, a hammer mill, then a grinder mixer, we wore out about three grinder mixers. I don't know it anyone even makes the darn thkings anymore.
