US beef producers blame Dep of Ag for South Korea ban

Angry US beef producers are blaming their Department of Agriculture for the latest shutdown in trade with South Korea.

Three shipments containing prohibited beef ribs have been detected by South Korean authorities.

National Cattlemen's Beef Association's Jay Truitt says the industry plants involved did what they were supposed to, but USDA's Food Safety Inspection Service may not have.

"Our understanding is that the product that was sent to this distributor was clearly labelled for domestic use, only. And, there appears to have been some sort of a mistake that was made somehow or another, in regards to the FSIS export certificate," Mr Truitt said.

"There's no room for error," he said.

After all the trouble US beef had getting back into Korea after a 2003 mad cow case. So now, Truitt's group is meeting with USDA secretary Mike Johanns to find out what went wrong and why.
