I see where your part of the country got a little chilly last night - with just over the mountain in West Yellowstone getting down to 51 Below... Coldest in our area were mostly in the 20-25 Below range....

West Yellowstone and Cutbank fight for honors of getting on the news the most as the coldest place in the lower 48......

Got up to 8 above here today- which is 10 degrees above what they predicted-- and they are now saying this cold is moving east faster than earlier predicted :D  Only supposed to be 15 below tonite

International falls does a pretty good job of it too up in Northern Minni... I remember driving bakc from Montana in December and hearing the weather report from up there. We drove through the night, car was saying -12 or soemthing and they were -20 odd up there... BRRRRRRRR...

But yeah, the cold flowing off the yellowstone plateu into West Yellowstone, and the cold coming off the Beartooth into Red Lodge make some pretty darn cold temps in the lower 48.. Is Cutbank the record holder for the lower 48?

The lowest ever recorded in the contiguous 48 States, was -69.7 degrees - rounded off to minus 70 degrees - at Rogers Pass, in Lewis and Clark County, Mont., on Jan. 20, 1954. Rogers Pass is on State Highway 200 about 40 miles northwest of Helena....(Lincoln road)...
My Dad, Mom, and I were living in Helena that winter- its where my little sister was born in July 53.....

The lowest in the US was -80 at Prospect Creek Alaska on January 23, 1971....

International Falls Minnesota holds the record of the lowest average mean temperature of 36.4 degrees......

Sooooooooooooo, explain to me all about global warming??? I think we're getting back to how temps used to be.... and our weather is cyclical, just like the cattle market

Ohhh, BTW, yesterday was NASTY!!! -5, wind blowing at about 45 mph, it was COLD BBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Breaking ice got my gloves wet and in an instant they were frozen...chopping ice got water and ice on my glasses what fun!!! Today was sunny and warm, high of 2 above, but at least we had SUN. Made all the cows and calves a lot happier campers than yesterday

We will all make it through, that is the "cowboy way" :!:

8) 8) :D :D

We've hit another cold spell around here the last couple of days. Today was pretty warm at 12 above but the wind kept things pretty dang cold. Just about to run out of socks and duct tape to save the ears on the registered calves we have on the ground. I dont mind the cold so much as having to get out in it!!

Yeap...got all our carharts washed and ready for the next round. The cold aint so bad when it aint muddy....LOL but round here if its usually always muddy this time of year. Carharts are dual purpose...keep you warm, and keep yer clothes a lil cleaner than they would be without em.

Oldtimer, I think the West Yellowstone temp was factoring in wind chill but there has dang sure been a little frost on the punkins around here. Yesterday it was only six below but we had sustained north winds of thirty mph which is fity six below wind chill... spent all day trying to get all the stock to some kind of shelter and strawed down, even had an hour on the atv getting some horses off the flats.

Last night it got down to twenty four below but the wind quit blowing. This morning on my way into town to get a battery for the feed truck (the old one froze and busted) I saw that the river had gorged clear to my lower pasture. the Ice is almost touching the bottom of the bridge into town. After getting everything running again and the feeding done around here I headed down to gather everything off the river and out of the way in case the river decides to make a run on up the country. It was eight below but sunny when I headed out. As cold as it was it was sure beautiful with the sun making the Ice crystals in the air sparkle and the slush in the river was whispering like sandpaper on pine. took about four hours to get everything pushed out of the brush and the islands checked to make sure nothing had hung up on them.

Its nineteen below as I'm typing this but everything is safe and fed and I managed to thaw out also with a hot bath and a couple of hot toddys.

I did manage to learn a couple of things today though, one: if you are walking beside your four wheeler to warm up and the glove running the throttle freezes and you stumble and fall it will drag you!

two: a cold beer under a shade tree when it is a hundred degrees beats the hell out of a hot toddy in a hot bath when you are shivering hard enough to cause waves to splash over the side of the tub. Lets all hope for a chinook soon and may global warming hurry up and get here.

It was a cold day here yesterday, but nice because it was sunny and the wind let up. Yesterday's overnight low was -3 and a high of +12. This morning it is already +10! 8) Cows were really thirsty when I chopped ice yesterday. The day before I chopped it but the wind must have discouraged them from coming to the tank and it just froze back over again. I got the water line dug in and have a new automatic waterer to install for my calves, but I'm not going to mess with concrete until spring is here. :D

just went to the shop to get my car out and let 'er warm up before heading to work and when i turned the ignition, she "locked" into place and danged near blew the engine.....but, at least she started!!! If the wind should kick up, even to a "gentle breeze" it will feel a whole lot colder than the -23 that the thermometer is reading now!!!  I will get a pix or two of the river today and post it for everyone out there who has never seen the madison river when she "gorges".....quite a sight!!!
