Random acts

There is plenty in the news about random acts of violence. But tonite on the internet a woman wrote about some random acts of KINDNESS she sees or does herself. One was that she carries extra umbrellas in her car and during a rain storm just hands them to strangers passing by. That would never have entered my mind so I was thinking if you're interested it might be enlightening to share some on Ranchersnet.

Like that old Ann Murray song about nothing to report on the news.. I have found that nine chances out of ten, I have gotten into to trouble just trying to be kind.. Seems like it always backfires. I'm just alittle more selective on the random acts of kindness....

nr---what a BEAUTIFUL topic to bring up!! In today's world, where we are inundated with BAD news on t.v., it is always good to remember that there is truly GOOD things happening!! I look forward to seeing what some folks post!! Simple things like stopping your vehicle so the lady with children can safely cross the street.....helping the elderly gentleman unload his shopping cart into his car.....helping the lost child find his/her parents in the local Wal-Mart....bringing in goodies to send a "care box" over to our troops in Iraq!!! These are a few of the "random acts of kindness" i have personally been privileged to witness!!!

How about you????

This topic got me to thinkin....Thanksgiving and Christmas are comin up, and there's always a good charitable group taking in donations for Canned food, Hams, all the trimmings that go with those meals. Our local 4H club and FFA Chapter kids really work hard at giving several needy families in our community a box with everything included to make that meal. Christmas boxes usually include toy's or clothes for the children in those families, and if it's an elderly couple, usually an afghan or something similar is included for them.

Not that kindness should be reserved for holiday time. Just thought I'd remind everyone.....it doesn't take a whole lot to make someone's day special.

All good ideas. Around here, we just kind of think of that kind of stuff as common courtesy.

When you see someone along the road, you stop, to see if they need help. We don't seem to have anyone close that needs help with food or clothes. We all neighbor. Best we can do is go into the towns or citiy and help some of them folks there.

I always hold the door for people, regardless of age or sex. And I try and get there before an older person to get it for them.

My sister is goin' throiugh kind of a rough time right now and money is tight, so when I was there the other day, I helped carry in her groceries and left a $50 under one of the bags. She thanked me later.

I'll have to study on it and try and thinkmof some more ways to help folks out.

One way, is to call a friend or someone who is older and don't get around too much. Even taking the time to listen to an older person, is nice. Too many times, we are all too busy to spend time with people. Maybe just taking the time to do that, is a kindness.

Jinglebob---isn't it amazing how what most of us take for "common courtesy" or manners, some folk are just amazed at!!! My hubby still tips his hat at a lady when introductions are made, shakes a fellers hand, holds doors open for ANYONE, stops his vehicle to let another in and says "good morning" to a stranger in the cafe!! Blessed am I that he is teaching these same manners to our children!!  Sounds like you are cut from the same cloth!! :D :D :D :D

Jinglebob,
your comment on holdin doors open made me chuckle. I too hold doors open for folks...be it man or woman, young or old. Surprises me how many times they just pass on thru without sayin a word. But I keep right on doin it. Men really hesitate alot of the time, to go thru the door while I"m holdin it open for them. LOL
But when I'm on the receiving end, someone holdin the door open for me, I always say Thank you, and look that person in the eye. It is really funny seeing the surprised look alot of people get when you thank them for it.

I'm just afraid if I didn't my Mom or dad would come back from the grave to box my ears!

Yup, common curtesy is easy and sure gets you some odd looks at times!

I always smile when I hurry to get to a door, ahead of an older couple, then hold it for them. You can just see the change on their face, when they realize you wasn't tryin' to beat them to the door, but tryin' to help them out. :D

Sooo, if I shake a mans hand when I meet him, is it alright to kiss a woman? :???:

Common courtesy as we learned it, is becoming a lost art.

Mr. FH is the most courteous person I know. It just comes
naturally to him and he has made me more aware of being courteous.
We even thank each other for things we do for each other. I never
gave it a thought, but we've had folks mention they noticed that
that more than once. I have never been as good as it as he has,
but he has certainly helped me learn to be better. "Thanks" is
really easy to say, don't know why it is so hard for some to say it.

We live in a town where the kids will open the doors for you
still. Always suprises me, and I always do thank anyone for
opening a door.

Mr. FH calls ladies he doesn't know, (waitresses, etc.) Ma'am. He means
it in the most respectful way, but sometimes I wonder if he isn't gonna
get told off for that. The world has changed so much.

A couple years ago we were in Edmonton for the Canadian Finals rodeo,we stayed at sons university apartment. Greg gets up EARLY,deciedes to go get coffee from Tim Hortons just down the block. Has to go down 18 floors on elevator, university students in elevator, tips his hat and says Good Mornin,he said the kids hunkered in the corner scared of crazy cowboy, then get down to ground floor, holds door open to outside, tells the students have a nice day, says the fear in thier eyes were apparent  Sad thing is this is just a normal for greg,he would never think of not sayin mornin, holdin doors...doesn't call then random acts of kindness but "havin respect" and he expects the same from our son.

Good for him!!!

I wonder sometimes if that isn't part of the problem...parents don't
'expect' or demand as much as they should out of some of the kids.
Can't expect much if parents are pals instead of leaders.

'Course it takes time and energy to be a leader...

i'm a yes sire hello mam kind of person myself... Don't know why, jsut have always been that way.. People at college always thought I was so formal and stuff, holding doors open for people, saying have a nice day to folks I didn't even know but it just kind of slips out... one of the hardest things I have had to do out here is talk to folks and call them by their first name... Oh it kills me because they are all 30 years older than me but I guess that is what happens when people think you are an adult, don't want you calling them Mr. Smith or Mrs. Jones anymore or whatever their last names are....

The only random acts of "kindness" I do around here tend to involve getting people out of ditches during the winter.. Have done that a couple of times and didn't even get thank you... shrug, when I do get one I always say it is not big deal anyways so I guess maybe word has gotten around that I don't need any thank yous, lol.

Our friends had to make a trip over the weekend which their elderly mother Lucille couldn't physically do so they asked me to check on their mom twice a day by phone which I enjoy and lets me get to listen to her rendition of her day told with a Kentucky accent. Lucille said she couldn't get the key out of the front door due to some hand weakness. So she left a note on the mailbox telling the mailman that she had a problem. Would he please help her? There was a knock on the door later and a new mailwoman was there instead of the usual guy. She very kindly took care of Lucille's key problem and must have been wondering about the scope of her new postal job responsibilities! Anyway, it struck me that random acts of kindness don't always have to be difficult just as some of you have observed.

went to boze-angeles with the hubby and boys tonight to finish up some halloween shopping and then hit the JB's for dinner!! had a lovely dinner with the boys, but when we all got settled into the car, we found that the battery was DEAD!!! Not even a "click" when the key was turned!! No jumper-cables in my car, either! A young lady with 2 small boys was just getting out of her car and preparing to enter the JB's when she saw our "distress".....she immediately offered her assistance and within 10 minutes, we found ourselves on our way!! Another totally senseless random act of KINDNESS!!! Yes, folks...........like the Chris Ledoux song says "there's a small light..in the dark night...human kindness...deep inside us....if you see it in somebody's eyes, there's no reason to be so surprised....let it shine on....it's only the light of the world"
