Rare Hog Breeds

Posted this in 'Everything Else', but it's not gettin' much response, so I thought I'd give it a go here:

A friend in our Grazing Club is looking for some Tamworth or Old Gloucestershire Spot breeding stock hogs for his organic free-range operation. So I told him I'd ask on a forum full of the most knowledgeable producers from across the globe. When I find that forum, I'll ask there too, but in the mean time, has anybody on here got any ideas? :p

There is a Tamworth breeder in Ponoka Pure Country but to be honest-Ty wasn't very happy with the results he got from the sows he bought there. Your friend would probably be better off just finding some sows from an old farmer that lets them run out. I bought a few from an old neighbor of mine-they'd farrow out in the bush and wean a dozen pigs a crack. That guy at Ponoka has an add in the Western Producer I think-403 783-5159. We bought a Large English Black boar from them too-there a pretty hardy breed too-we were going to use him on the Tamworth gilts but they were washouts. I might be able to find some Large Black cross sows for him as we'd lent that boar to a neighbor for a couple years. Like I said before he's probably better off getting some Variagated Northern Canadian range hogs for his deal-they'll cost less and work better.

Tell him to check out this site:

http://www.thepigsite.com/backroom/73/feed-and-ingredients

They have a discussion forum for buying/selling, etc. called Market Place.......

I post over there some, too.....same nick there as here!

Other than that, I really don't have any idea what he might do. Good luck to him, though!

By washouts you mean they weren't producers?

As for our friend, the hogs he has now are of the Variagated Northern Canadian Range type. Has had good luck with them, too. His main goal with the Tamworths or Old Spots is not just to crossbreed, but to raise some purebred stock. Registered breeding stock of Old Spots is quite rare apparently, and the Tamworths aren't far behind.

NR - does that fellow at Ponoka run his hogs out? With Don being cert. Organic, he has to be careful about what he brings in I guess.

As far as I know he does-Dylan Biggs hauled them up for me-I'd stick with the hogs that are working for him. Those people at Ponoka took my 10 year old for a thousand bucks that took him a long time to earn. One sow was infertile and one had one piglet so that's pretty much a washout. The boar was ok though.

Glad you're clear 'bout that

In Southern Kansas they have feral hogs that really abuse the range - well they make it bad to rope something horseback worse than pdogs.

I'm surprised they can run out that far north.
