What They Told Us: Reviewing Last Week’s Key Polls

There’s little doubt that the story of the past week was the Republican National Convention… and that the story of the convention was Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

Just over a week ago, hardly anyone had ever heard of the self-described hockey-mom. By Friday, one week after she was introduced to the nation, Palin was more popular that Obama or McCain. In general, McCain’s choice of a running mate receives slightly higher marks that Barack Obama’s choice of Joe Biden a week earlier. In the first wave of post-convention polling, McCain made significant inroads among women voters.

Palin’s popularity may have been boosted by the media response to her selection--51% believe that most reporters are trying to hurt her campaign. Just 5% believe the media is trying to help her.

Of course, McCain was nominated at the convention as well and Rasmussen Reports provided a profile on how voters view the Republican Presidential nominee. Overall, McCain and Obama are seen by voters as better prospects than the 2004 options, John Kerry and George W. Bush.

Barack Obama’s covention bounce peaked on Tuesday night and McCain has gained some ground since then. Most of McCain’s gains have come from women. On Tuesday, Obama led by fourteen points among women, that was down to a seven-point edge by Saturday morning. The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll will continue to measure the McCain bounce with new results released each morning at 9:30 a.m. Eastern. Monday morning’s update will be the first based entirely upon interviews conducted after the Republican convention.
