Rationed Healthcare? Ice Floes?

DISCLAIMER: I do not believe Obama wants to put old people on ice floes.

Obama Wants to Let Those Pesky Geezers Die

By Matthew Vadum on 6.25.09 @ 2:36PM

In a rare moment of candor, President Obama explained to an audience how government-run healthcare would work in America.

According to the Los Angeles Times:

President Obama suggested at a town hall event Wednesday night that one way to shave medical costs is to stop expensive and ultimately futile procedures performed on people who are about to die and don't stand to gain from the extra care.

In a nationally televised event at the White House, Obama said families need better information so they don't unthinkingly approve "additional tests or additional drugs that the evidence shows is not necessarily going to improve care."

He added: "Maybe you're better off not having the surgery, but taking the painkiller."

Obama said he has personal familiarity with such a dilemma. His grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given less than nine months to live, he said.

She fell and broke her hip, "and the question was, does she get hip replacement surgery, even though she was fragile enough they were not sure how long she would last?" [...]

So, old people: screw you. In the future Uncle Sam will put you on an ice floe and let you float away to your heavenly reward. It gives new meaning to the Latin phrase "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori." (In English, How sweet and glorious it is to die for one's country.)

Medical decisions should be made by patients, their families, and their doctors, not by government bureaucrats, but that's ObamaCare for you

We could adopt the Chinese philosophy.

Talked to a friend of a friend the other day who has been to China several times the past few years. He asked the interpreter about the blood splatters on the road. He assumed it was just deer, but the interpreter said that when the elderly feel useless to society they quite often sit in the middle of the road and let the trucks hurry the ageing process along.

Interestingly the one that brought up living wills and advance directives- and wanted to make sure it was addressed in the health care reform bill- and was substantial so that medical personel would follow them-- was Senator Coburn (R)- who is an M.D...

He said many times relatives come in and try to override the advance directives- or say "do anything" when there is nothing beneficial that can be done- but costly procedures/treatments are performed because of the relatives wishs and fear of their suits if they don't...

He said he had made it quite clear that if any of his relatives or anyone tries to override his advance directive of no resuscitation "I'll come back to haunt them forever"....

I agree with President Obama- a person dying of terminal cancer with little time to live shouldn't be given a hip replacement....Many of these people have many broken (cancer ate) bones by the time they die....They should take the license of any Doctor that would even suggest it...

Well hopefully they will not listen to Rahm's brother and his cost savings ideas.

May 13 2009 —Ezekiel Emanuel, a leading advisor to Budget Director Peter Orszag for drastic cutbacks in medical care, co-authored a 1998 article entitled "What Are the Potential Cost Savings from Legalizing Physician-Assisted Suicide?" (New England Journal of Medicine, Volume 339:167-172, July 16, 1998 Number 3).

Some states already have legalized Physician-Assisted Suicide....I know Oregon does-I think Washington too (the socially Libertarian states)- and just in the last few months 2 Montana Judges have ruled that mentally competent patients with terminal illnesses have the right to physician-assisted suicide under the state's constitution....

Personally- I believe a person has the right to die with dignity....Seen too many cancer ridden- or other terminal patients that splattered their brains all over the place- rather than face the continued pain/problems- and the bankrupting costs to their family..

after having seen patients that the nursing homes/social services have guardianship of, those with no family and have serious dementia. going through procedures that many healthy people would decline.. I can almost agree with you..

but... the choice should be with the ... patient doctor and family, not the government..

...and not for the sole purpose of saving money. But this is coming from a political ideology with a history of promoting Eugenics.

Do some research, and get back to me. Start with Planned Parenthood and go from there.

Is Fascism left or right of centre?

The Liberal habit of trying to re-write history and project their sins and guilt on conservatives hasn't worked with me, and it shouldn't with you either.

Here's some names to start with:

The modern field and term were first formulated by Sir Francis Galton in 1883,[10] drawing on the recent work of his half-cousin Charles Darwin. From its inception eugenics was supported by prominent people, including Margaret Sanger, Marie Stopes, H. G. Wells, Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, Emile Zola, George Bernard Shaw, John Maynard Keynes, John Harvey Kellogg, Winston Churchill, Linus Pauling[11] and Sidney Webb.[

Did you notice the Nixon tapes they released yesterday-- he supported abortion too- as long as it involved a black and a white combination parents...
He'd have fit in well with your paranoia- as his tapes revealed his fear of Jews.....

Before you embarass yourself, why not spend some time doing some research on the subject and get back to us.

Eugenics encompasses more than abortion

If you don't like the names I gave you, here's another: Nicholas Agar

I have read the history on eugenics- and how it/sterilization were used in the past...

I've seen no one even mention eugenics (I don't consider abortion under the eugenics definition) from either party...

Are you aware of eugenics in the present?

Typcially Eugenics is associated with Hitler, but that would be partly inaccurate.

Do you believe present day sterilization programs are Eugenics?

Huxley proposed eugenics in a context of social planning and collective internationalism whilst Agar has recently reformulated eugenics in a context of liberalism, individualism and market economy

The only eugenics I'm aware of are family/doctor supported sterilization of the severely mentally disabled- and I support it 100%....

Any Eugenics going on in the world that is Racially motivated? Any chance that US/Canada taxpayer dollars are contributing to the cause?

You don't have to go too far to search out the answer. Their have been opinions expressed right here on Ranchers that try to justify certain aspects of Eugenics, for social and economical reasons.
