Real cattle in a real drought

Mr. FH took some pictures of the cows and calves today. I thought I would share some of them here. They are taken around an artesian water tank, so the ground is pretty bare.

This is a 2-year old bull that we used last year too. He is out of a son of OCC Anchor. He wintered on grass hay and mineral, nothing else.

I wish our conditions were better, but these cattle never want for a drink of water and they don't have to go far to get one. We are so appreciative of that. Now we need to go get some pictures of cattle on grass...

I spent last Thursday and Friday helping pull bulls in several different areas that looked real similiar for grass condition. The cattle looked really good or fantastic. Not sure where they'll be in 60 days.....

Please know, that the grass is this way only because it is around a water tank. The pasture doesn't look bad, though it is cured out (dried up). I guess I will have to go take a picture of some grass to show you there really is some!!

The cattle have pretty much stomped it out by this tank as it is one that
gets used quite often. Artesian and it is cool water.

Sorry I scared everyone!!!!!!!!!!

I took a look again...man, it really looks like a desert, doesn't it?

Good looking livestock, Faster Horses. They seem to be utilizing the cured summer grass. The calves will bear down hard on the scales this fall. Thanks for posting the pictures.

Cattle look good :!: Grass on dry ground usually has more substance than grass on wet ground. Lets hope you get a bit of the wet ground in the near future.

I meant what you said..
I saw that dried out hardgrass behind. The big steer calf cut we rode is probably averageing #450 or so already (Jan or early Feb. calves). I'm just hoping that dust buggers or shipping fever don't rear their ugly heads.
I took another look, and I'd say about like yours. What are the cows weighing?

Good cattle-how deep is your artesian well? I know in western SD there is one that is 600 ft. and that is all the cattle have had for water for past 6 yrs. This particular one was put dug in 1961.

Good looking cattle.....but .....but there black :D I thought you were a red angus fan. Oh I am just messing with you. Good cattle are good cattle no matter what breed or color. Yes that even means I appreciate good herfs like cert owns. 8) Although it might take just a few silver bullets to admit to it. :D

Have a good one

Just picking on people who can dish out just as much as they can take.

I'm glad I'm in that club. :p (People who can take it and dish it out, too!)

I am a fan of Red Angus. Make no mistake. But there weren't any to be had in 1979 when we made the switch from Herefords to Blacks.
I think I mentioned that we are good friends of Bev and Roland Landrey,
who sold Galena to ABS many moons ago. I always loved their cattle
and still have a soft spot for the reds.

Would you believe I tried to buy some this spring from a fellow who had about 50 Red Angus 2 or 3 year olds? He
was thinking of selling out and going to work in the oil field.
He hasn't done it yet...

Oh, and to answer the question about the artesian wells...600 feet
deep or maybe a foot more.

No. Because if he sells them we want them. :p

Or did you want to know for some other reason?

Truthfully, I don't think they are for sale any longer.
He has decided NOT to go to the oilfield.

I think that bull looks pretty good, FH.

He looks well muscled, and masculine for a two year old.

Looks like he is fairing the dry condition pretty well.

Heck of a lot better than some of the more phony bulls that can be found.
