Gary Johnson Gains Support And May Take Ohio Out of Play for Romney

J.D. Tuccille|Sep. 28, 2012 10:17 am

The usual wisdom is that, as election day grows closer, support for third-party candidates tends to shrivel as the voting public heeds the tribal war drums and comes home to Team Red or Team Blue in a ritualistic display of political masochism that could be topped only by the sight of actual hair-shirted flagellants lined up to enter the polling booths. That third-party shrinkage may not be happening this year, though — or not yet, at least. A new poll from Ohio shows Gary Johnson gaining support, even as press reports emphasize the hold-your-nose-quality in which both major-party candidates marinate, and which may have voters looking elsewhere for options.

I will not accept the polls whether they look like what you want. I still haven't found anyone who responded or responded the way they were going to vote. They all say that it's no ones business. Polls have given a few guys jobs in this disastrous economy though.

I think Johnson could be the strongest Libertarian candidate votegetter so far...In 08 much of the Libertarian vote was split between Libertarian candidate Bob Barr and Independent candidate Ron Paul...Between them they got 3% of the MT vote... In some areas (like Montana) I think you may see Johnson get that or more...

Listen to Howard Sterns interviews of voters. It would be a stretch for many to even to have heard of this Johnson guy.

I've never taken Howard Sterns as an example of mainstream America or even knowing what mainstream America is about...
Just like Rush- another multimillionare shock jock that makes money off inflaming nutcases...

For one thing, I don't think Rush and Stern are anything alike.
I don't care for Howard Stern at all. But I saw the clips of what Larrry is
talking about. Stern sent a reporter out to ask people things about the
election. The answers were terrible. Obviously there is a group of people
out there that really doesn't know the candidates or what they stand for.
It really had nothing to do with Howard Stern except it was his idea and
for his show, obviously. I caught the clip on Fox News since I do not watch
Howard Stern. He's despicable.

I'd like to know how you living in Glasgow MT would know anything about "mainstream America" ?

That's not saying many in Montana or other "Ag" states aren't up on the election but that is not "mainstream America' anymore.

Oh there are a lot more of people being questioned about issues on the presidency. They showed the ignorance of many in the voting public. Howard Stern was one example.

You said the truth there Larry. there is a lot of ignorant voters. Not knowing all your choices sure proves that.

I guess I would be ignorant if I voted for Gary Johnson. Number 1, I hadn't heard of Gary Johnson until a month ago---so expecting me to vote for him in two months (with only four months knowledge of the guy) would mean that I put less thought into vetting him than the US did President Obama. If this Gary Johnson were truly a serious candidate, don't you think he would have done more to put himself out there for mainstream America? The little I have researched, the man wouldn't get my vote because of at least two of his platforms: drugs: "Governor Johnson believes it is insane to arrest roughly 800,000 people a year for choosing to use a natural substance that is, by any reasonable objective standard, less harmful than alcohol, a drug that is advertised at every major sporting event." (as a side note, I think opium is a natural substance) and foreign affairs: "AMERICA CAN ACHIEVE OUR FOREIGN POLICY GOALS without sacrificing American values.

No criminal or terrorist suspect captured by the U.S. should be subject to physical or psychological torture.
Individuals incarcerated unjustly by the U.S. should have the ability to seek compensation through the courts.
Individuals detained by the U.S., whether it be at Guantanamo Bay or elsewhere, must be given due process via the courts or military tribunals, and must not be held indefinitely without regard to those fundamental processes."

I highly doubt my reasoning makes me ignorant---it just means we do not agree.

If Johnson steals enough votes to allow Obama to win ANY STATE then he has got the effects of the next four years on his stupid head and so do all his supporters. The US and WORLD can't afford another four years of the Muslim Brotherhood loving golfing, vacationing, lieing, Piece of crap that is now occupying Air Force One.

Another method of monitoring "enthusiasm" is take into account the requests for absentee ballots.

At this point, in Ohio, Republicans are requesting ballots at over 100% of what they did in 2008.

Democrats are requesting ballots at 80%.

In 2008, it was reversed.

Good luck with your CBS skewed polls.

beetoven, when are you going to be willing to sign a cheque for our "wealth" disaparity?

You owe me money, I spent all mine...

everyone pretty much knows Johnson hasn't got a chance of winning,.. not even a slight chance...

but like the long line of forgotten presidential hopefuls,.. he may join an exclusive list...

Ross, Perot
Ralph Nader...

Just saying their name brings either contempt or ridicule...

and now Gary Johnson...

which will he be,.. contempt,.. or ridicule...

I think he may actually be remembered as the last libertarian candidate..

After seeing what Johnson stands for, voting for him is not ignorant it would be stupid. A guy that thinks Iran is not a threat is clueless, maybe hopefull but in reality clueless.
There is no way he will win so me voting for him is the same as voting for obama. And we all know he turned out to be, a total disaster.

I'm starting to think that you guys deserve Gary.

It would be a perfect end to the US, if the uneducated voted for him and obama was once again elected.

Sorry, they might deserve him but the rest of the WORLD that will be taken down with the US once Obama is re-elected, DON'T.

Gary Johnson has about as much chance as Ron Paul did in the Republican Primaries, to get elected. He is the same kind of nutcase and will be nothing more that the guy that split the NOT OBAMA vote.

Anyone wanting to know what the results of a third party does to an election need only to look North. The Liberals held on to power for a long time because they had the NDP splitting the NOT LIBERAL vote so the Conservatives had little chance to remove them.

Johnson doesn't have as much name recognition as Paul.

Speaking of nutcase shock personalities like Stern, The View has to rank up there where Whoopi and Behar whimper and whine and go stomping off when they lose a debate. Ifthey were winning they would keep their guest on as long as possible.

OMG I just saw a Gary Johnson Campaign ad.

Does the guy really want to be taken as a serious candidate with a garbage ad like that?

It honestly looks like a Saturday Night Live Skit.

The best thing about the video, said creator Josiah Schmidt, is that it was done on the cheap and took less than a day to make.

So he is spending millions to air a cheaply made campaign ad, now that sounds like the actions of a serious candidate
