You should look after those ol' crocks better than that BRG, they aren't shed off any better than these skinny cows up here. :p :D

Looks as though your grass will hold out for a while. How are your Sakic calves doing?

Thanks for the photos, I really enjoy seeing your cattle. :D

May was such a cold wet one that they are a bit behind in shedding their winter coat.

We don't have any Sakic calves this year. But we are turning a son out with the cows.

BRG, the May June bulss are coming along nicely.

What weight were they went they went to pasture?

What gain do you manage them for through the first winter?

The bulls winter the first year almost like a replacement heifer. They gain on average between 1 and 2 lbs, depending on the winter. Last year was under average as the winter was pretty tough. They went to grass in April weighing from 700 to 900 lbs with the majority in the 8's. We try to get them to gain on average from weaning day to sale day 2 lbs/day. Come sale day by doing it this way, the majority will weigh around 1400 to 1500 lbs, with the later June ones and/or the calving ease type bulls being lighter.

BRG, to me that is a good development program that assures enough growth, and will optimize longevity.

:D

How long have you been developing bulls using this approach?

Do you keep track of their gain on grass?

I think we have been doing the May/June calving since 2003. We have wintered and summered this way since we started this program. This year though we sold them in February instead of November, so they had a lot more feedlot feed than in the past.

We weigh them going on grass in April and when they come off in September. They usually do just under 2 lbs for average. I know they would do better if they had some better grass after July 1. They rotate between 2 different pastures of brome grass. After July 1 it goes back words here. I wish we had some native for them, but all of it is next to either our cows, or someone else'. I don't think anyone would appreciate 100 bulls next to them, so we just keep them in this grass.
