WASHINGTON – Earmarks. That's the name proponents call them. Opponents call them by a name you know better: pork barrel spending.

Call it what you will but among members of Congress, especially Republicans, it's a divisive subject and one that resurfaced last week when Sen. Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader and a proponent of earmarks called for their return use in the Senate, which banned them in 2009.

Following Reid's statement, GOP senators met behind closed doors to talk about the subject.

In the meeting was Sen. Jeff Sessions, who voted in 2009 to halt earmarks and who last week signed a letter calling on his fellow Republicans to continue to ban their use.
