Muslims warn of 'problems' in shared prayer room
Somali leader says Islam, Christianity incompatible

Muslims are demanding a private room to pray at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, saying there will be problems if they have to share an existing "quiet room" with people of other religions.

"Where you have Christians and Muslims praying at the same time, it will create a problem," said Fuad Ali, a Somali leader who spoke at a meeting with airport officials, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The meeting was a followup to an incident Nov. 20 when ticket agents and other passengers noticed six Muslim imams who had attended a conference in the area praying loudly before their flight, and shouting "Allah, Allah" when their flight was called. Officials said then they also asked to be scattered throughout the plane, rather than sitting together as they had been assigned. And some of the imams, although they did not need them, asked for seat-belt extenders.

(Story continues below)

The pilot summoned security and the imams were removed from the flight, and then they alleged that they were discriminated against because of their religion.

Now Somalis, who make up a large community in Minnesota and are predominantly Muslim, are demanding changes at the airport, including a private place for them to use for their prayers.

The airport, meanwhile, has suggested they share the room already set aside for such purposes.

The incident with the imams, who took another later flight, has launched both criticism and praise for the airline, US Airways. Critics say the airline was profiling based on religion, while those who praise the actions say safety must come first in the world since Sept. 11.

Ali said he just wanted a "guarantee" that something similar will not happen in the future.

But the airport already provides the generic quiet area, and if it would set aside a special area designated for Muslims, it could have to accommodate any – and all – other faiths the same way, noted Airport Director Steve Wareham.

"Our request would be you try the quiet seating area," he said.

That is a carpeted room furnished with chairs – but without any religious symbols, airport officials said. It has been in use for a number of years, but hasn't been obvious, so airport officials have promised to put up more signs to let people know where it is.

The airport also said people can pray in other parts of the airport as they wish.

As WND reported, one of the imams, Omar Shahin, is affiliated with a Hamas-linked organization and acknowledged a connection to Osama bin Laden in the 1990s.

Shahin is a representative of the Kind Hearts Organization, which had its assets frozen by the U.S. Treasury pending an investigation, notes Islam scholar Robert Spencer on his weblog JihadWatch

Treasury spokesman Stuart Levey in February said KindHearts "is the progeny of Holy Land Foundation and Global Relief Foundation, which attempted to mask their support for terrorism behind the façade of charitable giving."

The imams had attended a conference in Minneapolis of the North American Imams Federation, said Shahin, who is president of the group.

"They took us off the plane, humiliated us in a very disrespectful way," Shahin said after the incident.

The Washington, D.C., based lobby group Council on American-Islamic Relations also complained, according to CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper.

"Because, unfortunately, this is a growing problem of singling out Muslims or people perceived to be Muslims at airports, and it's one that we've been addressing for some time," Hooper said.

CAIR, however, has its own ties to Hamas, having been identified by two former FBI counter-terrorism chiefs as a spinoff of a front group for the Palestinian terrorist organization.

A Sept. 28, 2001, story in the Arizona Republic that said Arizona appears to have been the home of an al-Qaida sleeper cell named Shahin as one of three part-time Arizona residents who "fits the pattern" of the terrorist group.

Shahin, identifed as being with the Tucson Islamic Center, said members of his mosque may have helped bin Laden in the early 1990s when the al-Qaida leader was fighting against the Russians.

The CIA at that time, Shahin said, called bin Laden a "freedom fighter."

Witnesses to the imam's explusion said some of them made anti-American comments about the war in Iraq before boarding the flight, according to airport officials.

Give them their room-- then when they want access to it charge them a user fee for the cost of building and maintaining.....

If you want access to some of the preferred traveler lounges you either have to pay 1st Class rates or pay a fee to have a card-- so why should they be different..... At least then its available to them.......

Would you want to charge Christians to use a chapel?

Therein lies the rub!

If they built a private chapel for Christians- sure...Neither are forced to use it- as they have an open lobby they can use...

Same as the lounge rooms-- I could go to the airport bar, but sometimes I just enjoyed going in the "high class" lounges to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the airport....

it is pathetic, these people want to be treated as normal citizens, then demand special treatment!!

screw them! of course they were victims of racial profiling! they fit the description of the past 25 people involved in attacks against the American interests around the globe......

if they really need a place to pray, where Christians do not hinder them, might I suggest Iran?

Christians don't have a history of hijacking commercial airliners or blowing things up. Islamics that aren't trying to cause trouble or make a scene would refrain from doing any activity that would draw negative attention to themselves, particularily in an airport, IMO.

This is an example of how screwed up the Liberals have America at the moment.

Our Soldiers are giving their lives fighting the Radical Muslims of the world. If ever there was a time the Muslims should shut up and be quiet, blend in with the woodwork it is now. But no you hear more about Muslim rights now than you ever heard about before 911.

Sometimes I think I am living in Bizarre world where everything is backwards

aplusmnt-- You have to remember who has had total control of not only Congress , but also the White House for several years- and can't even shut our doors to, or find the thousands of undocumented mid easterners that are running around with the 15 to 20 million undocumented Latin Americans they have let walk into the country....

So you tell me how concerned these Repubs are about the common US citizen and the rights of the common man- Looks like they've spent the 12 past years selling out the US to every foreign country highest bidder- for the multinational corporate interests.... :(

Illegal immigration has been going on for ever. It was there during Clinton's reign. Dems do have the power to propose laws you know? Not sure you know that or not? What bill that a Dem leader proposed to do with Illegals did Bush ever VETO? What did Clinton do to stop them?

Only thing different now is that Liberal Media decided to make it a big issue against Bush.

And for the Record I think Bush, Clinton and all of them have did a terrible job with immigration issues.

But when I talk about Liberals getting the country so screwed up, I am not necessarily talking about just politicians. I am talking about the Media, activist groups, Black leaders, Social organizations, Teachers and the Public in general that buy into the Liberal Crap. I am talking about all this PC crap.

You are right about the Dems and Clinton-- but you can't get on too high a soapbox since the Repubs had 6 years total control- and did nothing to stop all the illegal activity.....

And the more immigrants they let in- the more Liberal the population seems to become....You'd think they would have at least worked 3 days a week on that problem  Probably all too busy stuffing their pockets with Corporate lobbyist dollars

me thinks it's time for the muslims to get there own airplanes if they cannot co-exsist with the rest of the religious folk. I'll start screaming that I need a Norwiegn pillaging area. Religious freedom ya know ........ Intolerance seems to be a common theme with the muslims. If they are intolerant (can't play nice) they should not be over here. Sorry was I being blunt again?

I do agree someone should be doing something about it. And as a president I hold alot against Bush for not doing more about Illegal immigration. A good conservative would nip this in the bud.

But he does kind of have his hands full, with a couple wars going on and all the crap he gets from the left.

Thing with Illegal immigration is that it will take some strong Conservative action to slow it down. And as soon as that happens then you libs will come out of your shells. Cause the Libs do not want to do anything about it period. Conservatives want to solve it, just most do not have the Balls to take the heat for the kind of actions it will take to do it. Libs like it the way it is.

Clinton did not do nothing about it because he liked it this way, Bush is just weak on this issue and needs Conservative UP and take care of it.

Our economy was weakening and Bush cut taxes and brought it back, Libs did not like it, whine and cry. If he did some tough measures similiar to stop illegals you guys would cry about it also. Does not matter if it works, it only matters if the ACLU is happy.
