Someone please remind me why I live in Nebraska????? :???: This mornings cold temps, and terrible wind just gave me thoughts of when I was Cabos...warm sunny sandy beaches....Then I'd get out and open a gate...and wham! a 30mph gust of freezing wind would hit me in the face and bring me back to reality... :( Not a fun morning!!

Ohhh, Jassy, your pics are "typical" of what goes on here...I remember when there was no wind but the mercury was at the lowest it could go on the outdoor thermometer...-50 F... could hear the air snappin', trees groanin' and took me 1/2 hour to dress up, 15 min to check heifers, 15 min to shed warm clothes...every hour....so I never went to sleep, just found me some "calving partners" on the phone...this was in mid 1990's. Glad we went to Fall Calving, don't have to deal with that anymore, this year we've had to deal with a lot of pneumonias. Kinda disheartening.

Gotta say that I am glad no days like that yet this year.. Nothing like the wind and cold snow in open country to take it right out of you... We had some -8 for highs last year with -20 or so for lows and you just lost your breath the moment you stepped outside... I have dealth with colder when I was out west but I never had to be out in it for too long...

Pneumonia in calves just stinks Hanta, sorry to hear you are having troubles with it... With spring calving our problem with it is usually associated with the darn dust when it gets to dry in June.. Also, sometimes when the plows are running and it is dry we get a lot of dust in the air, seems to hurt the young calves on days like that.

LOL...well now Jassy girl. I would do it for ya.....yep I would..but umm I am needed South ;) lol. And, yes you have a great life girlfriend, you have that romantic cowboy to cuddle up to everynight. Not many of those out there. You can just keep the ice and snow lol...after this many years of hearing about it..think I will take this rain for a few months over the snow for 6 months lmao. Remember staying up and talkin on the phone keeping someone else awake during them icey snowy nights calving..lol.

Luv you always gal,
Easty

I was suprised to see that you fall calve. I stupidly moved all mine to spring several years ago , before I knew better. I wish they were all fall .

I moved my cows to fall calving years back because of sickness. We would lose too many to scours but it was caused by a bad pneumonia that could strike at 24 hours of age.

About 3-4 years back we moved them back to January calving as we found selenium fixed the pneumonia problem. The winter feed bill for the cows with fall calves was killing me. We would miss the grazing until January and have to suppliment them until grass time anyway. The 3 months of Oct-Dec "free" feed on stubble residue really makes a difference to the feed bill.

We switched from January to fall calving about 15 years ago but I quit having to A'I during deer season just wasn't going to work for me-I plan on remembering deer hunts on my death bed not A'I'ing cows when it's cold-other than that it worked real well. Now that we start calving in May I think I've found my spot-my A'I' crew hasn't gone to school yet in August. Funny thing though when I first started A'I'ing for folks my busy time was May/June with some actually breeding in April-now July getting to be the busy time. January calving is just a distant memory-not a real fond one at that. When we used to calve then I was whining to a neighbor about being up all night calving cows his reply-"The only people who should work at night are whores and thieves" lol.

I never stay up at night. Funny thing is January has been the better calving weather here than March/April for many years. AI is a wonderful tool you know exactly which cows to watch.
