removing calves to promote estrus

This was talked about on the radio yesterday. KFRM, an ag radio station. I missed the correct length of time to keep the calves away from the cows. Is it 24 hours or 48 hours?

Yes we have...... This can be potentally a big wreck with scouring calves.. a person should milk the cows out before putting the calves back on the cow. The cows will certainly come into heat, but the hassle of calves not on the cows could be nasty...

I imagine I can find better things to do than milk out several hundred cows just to make sure they are cycling.

Well surely it wouldn't be so bad if they were a smaller FRAME SCORE. :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

There's gotta be a way to turn this perfectly innocuous thread into a fight about FRAME SCORE!

YOU'RE WRONG. :p

Larger cows would be easier to milk as they are higher off the ground.

Thanks for the answer. I've got about a dozen heifers I want to move up. They probably won't be heavy milkers. I'll turn this over to you guys on the frame score debate

DejaVu,
A dozen or so cows won't be a big deal, I'm sure you'll get along just fine.
But they're heifers! :?: I don't see why it wouldn't work, it might take a little longer than 48 hrs. I'd be interested to know the total hrs with no calf, the heat percentage, and then the conception percentage!

My ET guy told me it was a build up of hormone in the milk that was reabsorbed my the cow. Probably worth a try, although may be less effective with heifers being they are still growing.

I wanted to try this on a group of late calving heifers. They are late calvers because I bought them the middle of June,09. I synched them and AI'd them on June 23,09 to Connealy Front Page. I calve from Feb1-April1. Usually calve my heifers in January. I'm afraid these girls won't make the cut, or I can extend my calving season, which I really don't want to. It's a situation where the extra grass was offered and I had to find a way to utilize it. It's darn hard to find cattle in this area at that time of year. Harvest shuts down the cattle market. I know I can synch them again but was looking at a way to avoid the chute time.
